Xiá Mǐn Li You're not worth as much as you may think; this is what others tell you, in an attempt to get you to squirm in discomfort. Except, well, you've known what you wanted to do for a long time now, and you know exactly what you're worth. You should be the one telling them how much they are worth, but that's just a bit too.. out of your comfort zone, don't you think so? |

independent . realistic . dependable . clever . confident . observant : positive resentful . sharp-tongued . impatient . insecure . suspicious . irritable : negative personality- you know, that's a bit of a broad subject in itself. you could stick a bunch of traits together, paste them on a person's sleeve, and shove them off into the world. i might as well be doing that now, i mean, did you see the trait list right above us? yeah, that's something i'm going to be going off of, because i'm such a dull person when it comes to these. anyways, yeah. i should do the thing already. independence is a real big thing with xia, mostly because she almost always lived under the thumb of someone else, under the control of a higher-up boss. for once in her life, she just wants to live a life without consulting someone else. she has ideas, plans for the future, and it includes showing that she can actually stand alone on something. she's a realistic type of woman, and doesn't enjoy trying to sugarcoat things, just so that they are able to be digested by those that have weak stomachs. she doesn't have a positive or negative look on life; it's more of an in-between sort of thing for her. days will not always go her way, and she's plenty fine with that happening. she doesn't believe in luck or charms, she just believes in off days and alright days. xia is quite the reliable researcher, you can count on her for mostly anything- except if you attempt at using force with her. she practically sweeps off threats of force that go her way, and will tell you outright that she will not fulfill the order if it is shoved on her without warning. she believes in retaliation and the right to not work, even if she might end up being killed due to it. while she may not look like it at first, she is clever, intelligent, even. she should be; she did get one of the highest college degrees available, and now she is working in a lab, making new discoveries every once in a while. she enjoys what she does, so it all works out pretty well in the long run. confidence is something that she is brimming with, and will not hesitate to assert it when the time is right. xia believes in herself, even if others do not. she will prove herself correct in the end, so it works out nicely, doesn't it? taking in her surroundings, that's one thing that she does not mind going along with. observing what is happening around her, that is one part of her life that comes naturally to her. once seeing an occurrence that seems at least mildly interesting, she will look into it, analyze it, and comprehend the most important sections. you could almost say that she has a natural talent for this type of comprehension. it isn't like she hates everyone out there, but she does have a high amount of loathing for most people she meets. her least favorite people- they are probably the high and mighty types, or the ones with a great deal of money. basically, she despises people higher in social rank than she is, which is.. a great deal of people. xia does tend to keep her thoughts to herself, and she looks like she's enjoying her time around them. parties, she likes; the people, not so much. miss xia has a pretty wide range of vocabulary, enjoying the usage of synonyms for the most simple of words. she could be doing nothing at all, yet she will create an intricate array of words that appear like she is completing something- all with a very sharp tone of voice. her words come out as harsh, blunt, and cold, though she may not mean it entirely. most of the time she will have a lighter tone of voice, though this is her sharper emotion, when she barely wishes to deal with someone. patience should be key, but xia is the complete opposite of patient. she wants things done quickly, so that she doesn't have to wait around for something simple to be accomplished. in order to prevent herself from seeming outright impatient, she will idly work with her nails, bite her lip- do something that involved no thinking, just to pass the time. she doesn't value herself as high a person as others might. xia considers herself a waste of space, unimportant, so on and so forth. she tells herself that she's worth so much more than she thinks, and it helps her insecurity a tad bit, and she will actually feel like she's important for the next moment. she also blames herself for when things can go wrong, as though she could have changed the outcome. suspicion runs high with her, and she honestly trusts no one out there, save a few friends, maybe a couple co-workers. you can never know when someone might be working for the good guys, or the bad guys. where xia works- she's more of a neutral party, and money is her bait. she'd give more information, or more assistance, if there were more pounds involved. you could say money is her weakness; you would be correct. when the world tends to annoy the shit out of you, you'd probably end up a bit more irritable than others, wouldn't you? that's the case with this asian woman; people annoy her, but she only gives them an irritated smile and say that everything is alright, that they would be leaving in a few minutes anyway. that's her idea of life; the annoyances may stay around for a few more minutes, but they'll eventually leave. it's just life. |

Roses - xia loves this specific type of flower, and especially loves the saying of 'every rose has its thorns'. it can be quite a few colours under the sun, though her favorites must be the blood red and snow white colours, for romance, and for eternity. Manners - a major bullet point here, it has to be the manners of other people. she enjoys hearing 'please' and 'thank you', when others open up doors to allow her inside, so on and so forth. she would give them a small smile and a 'thank you' after someone does something for her, no matter if she asked for it or if it was done without asking. Life - you only live one time, and xia makes the most of it. parties are fantastic, discoveries are completely out of this world, and sitting around the house is such a bore. you will rarely ever see her stay still in a place for more than a few moments, that much is certain. Fireworks - celebrations cannot actually be celebrated without them, right? poppers, snappers, light-up-with-fire ones, you name it, she loves them without a doubt. some could say that she is a bit of a pyromaniac with these things, but- nah, never mind. we were just about to find a reason on why the term doesn't work, but we can't find a way to deny it. Music/Singing - mostly pop and newer music, the ones that a great deal of people hate, xia loves it all. she won't hesitate to sing anything by katy perry, especially the song 'firework'. that's her favorite song, no questions about it, though she has started to like different songs by different bands. she has recently found an admiration for taylor swift. Science - specifically the branch of life science, biotechnology, xia really does enjoy the different theories and possibilities of what life's secrets may be. she has a small dream of being the one to make a world-famous discovery. Technology - with all of the newest advances in the technological field of study, it looks like she can't keep up with everything. the only problem to that statement is that, she does keep up- quite well, actually. even if she may not have the most amount of money, she tries to get the newest, up-to-date items that will assist in her own advantage. | Not having money - the world seems to run on the paper currency, and she is not exempt to this. she was used to not having a great deal of money in her youth, but she cannot possibly fathom having none at all. People - okay, maybe xia isn't exactly the kindest of females. she really doesn't have a great opinion of the world she lives in, and seeing how some of the most ridiculous things get people in trouble, she honestly lost faith in a great deal of humans over the years. Lack of Technology- with no technology, she doesn't know what to do in her spare time. low batteries are her downfall. sure, she could read a book from the library, but she's just so used to the electronics that she doesn't know what else to do. Chinese - Lack of Activity - the party doesn't start until she walks in- nah, not literally. but she really doesn't like boring settings with absolutely nothing going on. if anything, it irritates her, and she'd grit her teeth until she says that they need to get moving, do something, at least. Romance - while the concept isn't foreign to her, she still doesn't like it. having a boyfriend can lead to her becoming a fiancee, then a wife- that's a scary thought for her. she would rather not go past a couple dates with someone, and immediately break it off afterward. Vanity and Ego - these two honestly irritate her to no end. she doesn't like those people that are all about appearances, all about how they look, and how they should be treated. xia treats everyone the same: like they cannot do something to save the world, which is mostly true. |

Making an important discovery - she wants the world to know who she is, and what she can do. whether it be an important segment of a critical crime case, or just some assistance with a smaller case, she wants to be the one to solve it. Creating a firework display - a lesser dream, but still one of them, is her lust for creating the most spectacular firework display. something that will include all colours under the sun, images created in the sky, so on and so forth. Moving into a house - being in an apartment only gets you so far, even though you're the only one living there. she does, however, want to move into a house by her mid to late thirties, possibly with a few dogs and a cat to keep her company. hey, it's better than sharing the place with another person. | Dipsophobia - the fear of drinking; she contracted this once hearing about how a great deal of car accidents are caused by people under the influence. she refrains from drinking anything that has alcohol in it; the closest to beer she could get is root beer. Gamophobia - the fear of marriage; while xia might be someone who could get a boyfriend or girlfriend, she never wants to get past that point. the thought of being tied completely to one other person frightens her, and she'd rather not try to settle down. with recent years, she has stayed single, and has no wish to move forward with a relationship. Being broke - having just enough to scrape by is fine, but becoming completely and utterly broke is frightening. she will always make sure that she has money in the bank, just in case, because she wouldn't know what to do if she didn't have any money at all. |
Background |
histories are normally bland, lifeless, lacking in interest. xia's back-story can also be considered like this, as there really aren't a great deal of plot twists or powerful points. we start with her birth, her coming of existence into the lovely world in which we live in. july first, at eleven-fifty in the morning, we hear the screaming of a newly birthed child in the hospital room, followed by the hushes of the mother and scrambling around of the doctor and nurses. a little baby girl, how adorable she looked, how fragile. it was at this time that she would be named xia min, a name she would eventually grow into and prove to the world on how wonderful she would become. she was also given an english first name- hong kong was still under english rule- and was also given the name of rose. fast forward to age two, where there's this accidental second child, and it just so happens to be a male. coveted this new child was, the older girl named xia was left in the dust. she would later know the term for this shift in attention: favoritism. the boy, he was alright in general; quiet, intelligent, energetic. she couldn't hate him for the attention shift onto him, but she didn't think highly of him. she would wake up at night, go toward his crib- and whisper that she was the first born and that she would be the best out of the two. hong kong was under the english ruling for a while now, since the 1840's, so it would make sense that when she first went to school, there would be some english involved, as well as chinese and cantonese. she was proven to be quite a brilliant young girl, and by the time that it would be considered required to fully learn english and chinese, she was ready for the change. so, for about four years, xia learned english, and understood it to a degree. she will always consider cantonese as her language most comforting, though. during her junior secondary years, she figured out her eventual study and outcome in work; biotechnology. the idea of genetics and medicine brought a glint to her eyes, and the other idea of how the work can be integrated with an actual career was interesting. it seemed that she wanted to further her education past the junior years and into the senior secondary years, and eventually, this happened. by the end of secondary schooling, she was officially an adult, and could officially enroll into a college. there was a small catch, though, and it was the fact that she didn't want to stay in hong kong for college and the rest of her life. the booming population and bright lights were her home, yes, but she wanted something new, something different. so, she decided on heading somewhere she did not know and make something of herself. she applied to the university of greenwich in england, as well as a few others in the country, and was accepted to greenwich in the field of biotechnology. her bags were packed, her loans were out, her debt was rising, but she was out of the asian continent before she was twenty-one. we look at her progress in college, and we see that it's nothing short of satisfactory. she's getting pretty nice grades, has a part-time job at this restaurant down the street from the dorms, and is an overall successful college student that is in debt. although, this is when we get to the more exciting parts of her life: the mistakes that she makes and her first parties. starting with the parties, she was invited to her first during the second year of college, and it was her first time being near the fireworks. some idiot decided to purchase about five pounds of fireworks, explosives, and gave a few sparklers to xia, telling her to loosen up and light them up. well- she did, and flinched when it started to light up. she looked back at the sparkler after about ten seconds, though, and became fascinated with how it continued going, and she soon learned to love fireworks. the rest of that party was nothing but fireworks, and she was one of the few lighting them up. needless to say, her love for fireworks, explosives, and fire grew from that experience. we don't know if that's a good thing, or a terrible thing. fast forward to her finishing college, as well as her applying for jobs in different places around england. she managed to score a crime lab technician role in london by the time she was twenty-six, and she has worked with several cases. this is about the time where she realized just how dangerous being in london really was- but, she didn't care that much. she had also dropped her english name of rose by this point, and being known as li xia min was pretty much perfect for her. now, at twenty-nine years, she's living in an apartment, she has a pretty secure career, and things are just going to get more interesting. |

Some say that it only takes one time before you get addicted to something. What they are talking about are normally drugs, substances with nicotine, so on and so forth. Well, Xia was never the one to really smoke or have heroin shots, so those ideas were quickly discarded. What thing only took one time, you might ask. Well, if we take into account of her first college party, then we might know exactly what it was. Just so that we're clear, she became addicted to explosives. Fireworks. Things that light up. Those sparklers really did mess with her mind. We should probably check her brain function and make sure she's sane. Nah, that's not worth it. What was the point of this, again? Oh, right, there was a burn victim right in front of her, and the other specialists were busy trying to figure out who this person was, and how they managed to get burned to a crisp without anyone really knowing about it. So, being the type of woman she was, she returned to the present, and started looking over the body with a low amount of interest. You see, that morning wasn't exactly her favorite. She had received a call at about three in the morning from her parents, saying how much they missed her, so on and so forth. Of course, they couldn't wait until she was actually awake at five-thirty. That would just be out of their convenience. So, she lied and said that she missed them too, and she would call them again soon. That followed with hanging up and crawling back into bed, pulling the sheets over her face, and waited until the alarm sounded. That would be the only thing to drag her out of the bedroom for the rest of the day. Returning to the present, to the charcoal-shaded dead person she was examining, she was starting to be a bit more interested, especially when there was something she noticed; a patch of skin in the underarm, no more than a few millimeters in diameter, wasn't actually coal black in colour. "Perfect," her voice was soft, and there was the start of a smile on her lips. "Looks like finding out who this guy isn't all lost." She rose back up from her leaning, standing straight in place. Her face was turned to one of the guys that was speaking, and squinted up at him. "Get the bit of skin off of him, it's in the underarm." she started, then glancing over her shoulder at the other co-worker, who immediately shut his mouth. "You, start running examinations on the sample. Find out who it was." Thing was, at the end of her words, she started smiling. "Oh, almost forgot- get this done quickly, please?" Manners, of course, were something that she was raised with, and she almost forgot them. Oh well. Once those guys got done, she'd look a bit more into it before coming to a conclusion. She thought the dead guy was playing around with fireworks and didn't know how to work them. You only see one of those incidents before everything starts looking the same. |
