Dr. Roderich Maximilian Amadeus von Edelstein Here you have the stereotype of a pure aristocrat. Famous in London for being the psychiatrist of the rich, famous, powerful, and sometimes even dangerous, his name is well known. Not many people are aware of the fact that the professional code of psychiatry doesn't always apply to Roderich. For, at the right price, he might be willing to pass on his notes from particular sessions with certain clientèle to anyone who wants information. After all, a man's got to make money after three divorces and being cut off from his rich parents. |

Dr. Roderich Maximilian Amadeus von Edelstein - the name is certainly a mouthful. A renowned psychiatrist known as "The Aristocrat", his regal and pompous behaviour live up to the name. Roderich von Edelstein is a pure-blooded noble; a gentleman of the Viennese upper classes. Sophisticated, educated, and well cultured, he is a man who has been brought up on and has a love for the finer things in life. His manners are perfect, and his words are clipped and enunciated. Roderich always makes sure to think before he speaks, mind you, and will always take a moment or two to make sure he retains a calm and composed poise about him. His dignity is something he intends to keep intact, no matter what the situation. So try and work him up all you like, but it would take something huge to see Roderich loose his cool. He is an incredibly refined young man. Everything Roderich undertakes is done with an air of confidence and complete elegance. Always keeping himself in pristine condition with his head held high, even if he makes a mistake Roderich just is the sort of man who can pull it off without looking like a fool. He commands a great deal of respect from others around him, and simply because of his high status, it seems that many people do admire and look up to the Austrian. He seems to be the type of person people are in awe of the moment they see him, with his graceful movements and well-groomed appearance. It is a fair comment to make that Roderich is a socialite. Able to handle himself very well in and sort of social situation, he is known to be the perfect guest at any soiree or event, and an even better host. For when he does host, my oh my does he spoil his guests! He wants to make a good impression after all. Roderich is a man who is not known to be subtle, and his flamboyant and extravagant displays from time to time are an obvious hint that, really, he loves to go all-out when he has the chance to. After all, this man was brought up with everything being served to him on a silver platter. He is used to the finer things in life, that is for sure. Though he may seem to be awkward at times, Roderich is a romantic, and incredibly caring. Truly, he treasures those closest to him, and would go to any lengths to make them happy. Or at least, do what he thinks will make them happy. Sometimes he fails to see things from their perspective. However, he honestly does have a heart of gold, and has all the best intentions in the world. If you can ever get close to him, Roderich will always try to be the perfect friend, family member, or lover for you, and wants nothing more than to see those he cares about happy. It breaks his heart if they are not. He also has a very soft, gentle kindness which makes quite a number of people warm up to him, and though he can never be everyone’s cup of tea, there are times when it is hard not to like a man like Roderich. Fatherly, in many respects. Roderich feels a great deal of care towards people he is closer to, and makes efforts to strike up bonds with certain people in particular. Particularly with younger people, Roderich ends up taking them under his wing, "adopting them", and acting as a father figure and role model to them. He wants to see them thrive, and pushes them to make better decisions than he did. One of his dreams is to have children of his own, but in the mean time Rod will look after others and practically raise them. These people he takes on are often also his "snitches"; people who will go out and collect more information for him, which he can then sell on later. Unfortunately for Mr. von Edelstein, his upper class background does mean that, as times, he does come across as incredibly arrogant, and tends to look down his nose at those he considers to be of a lesser class or status than himself. His background has also made him quite a spoilt young man, who expects to get exactly what he wants at all times. Then there is the side of him that seems incredibly uptight, and he certainly does come across as a prude most of the time. He shows absolutely no tolerance for anything “vulgar”, and is known to be a bit of a party-pooper when he finds something immature, inappropriate or uncouth. In this respect, he is also rather reserved, and keeps himself very distant to those he does not want to associate with, and only ever lets a very small handful of people ever get close to him. Roderich will often admit this himself: he is not exactly a very strong man. If anything, he's weak and rather dependant on others. For example, for a very long time he had not learnt how to cook for himself, so when he was sent off to university, he was rather dependant on his room-mates' culinary "expertise" and take-aways. Roderich really... doesn't have much of a back bone, in all honesty. He struggles to stand up for himself or for what he believes in. In short, he is the sort of man who would rather stand and watch from the side-lines rather than get directly involved in an incident. He just seems to lack courage; a certain "oomph" in his voice and confidence in himself. In any sort of confrontation, Roderich struggles to be taken seriously. He just cannot present himself in a strong, tough, and manly manner during such incidents. It does have severe impacts on his pride and masculinity, and Roderich feels great shame of the fact he is not a stronger person. He was pampered far too much during his childhood, and now he struggles to make his way in the real world. Cunning and manipulative, Roderich finds the best way to get what he wants and when he wants it is to use other people. He'll wrap them around his little finger and manipulate them into doing everything he wants. He grew up spoilt and is not used to not getting his own way, so he uses cunning to ensure that everything falls exactly into place for him. He works to make sure he'll end up on top. Ah, but Roderich also is a rather lazy man who completely lacks priorities. If he had his own way, he wouldn't be working. He would just want to spend his time doing what he enjoys, which means Roddy tends to put off certain things until the last minute. Procrastination should be his middle name. Roderich deliberately wastes time so he does not have to finish something which he does not want to. His laziness is rather frustrating to people he works with. On a completely unrelated note, something people also tend to find incredibly frustrating about Roderich is his total lack of a sense of direction, especially when he always gets lost and people have to be sent out to find him. Tight and miserly, Roderich can be more than a little bit cheap. This may seem odd with his background, but he began to appreciate the value of things and money after his parents cut him off. Now, he is a saver... to the extreme. Waste not want not, as they say. But he is far too tight. It can make him a little bit mean with anything he gives out, thus appearing he is not a very charitable man either. |

Music || He is from Austria, the country of Mozart and classical music. This is really an unsurprising like for him, especially as he grew up surrounded by music. He learnt the piano at a very young age, and still plays it frequently for his own pleasure. Also, he writes his own music too. Etiquette || Because class, refinement, and manners will never go out of fashion. Coffee || Every morning begins with a cup of Viennese coffee, and Roderich is really a huge fan of the entire cafe culture. Most lunchtimes are spent in a coffee shop, with a cup of coffee... Cakes / baking || ...and a slice of cake. Cake and coffee is the perfect combination. Roderich also bakes at home; he is very talented with a piping bag and icing/frosting. Baking is a passion of his, and his cakes are really works of art. Especially his Sacher Torte. Mmmm~ yum. Psychology || The works of Freud fascinated him as a child, so much so that he went on to study the subject at university and go into a career of psychiatry. Horse-riding / dressage || As a child, he always wanted to join the Spanish Riding School. Now, as an adult, he still admires the sport, and occasionally may spend some time in the saddle. Collecting fine china || It's a hobby, okay? He has a huge collection of matching sets and everything. And it's much more refined than other hobbies. Reading || One of the most therapeutic and stimulating activities one can participate it. It is always enjoyable to get lost in a good book, and it expands the mind as well. Roderich loves to read. He might stay up all night to finish off a particularly engrossing book. Skiing || One of the only sports he actually enjoys, and every winter he goes back to Austria for a skiing trip. Underwear fetish || This is completely serious. He has a huge fetish for it, and some people say he knows everything there is to know about underwear. He certainly is knowledgeable about the subject. Also, he may never openly admit this, but Roderich is the biggest Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mozart fanboy ever. | Waste || This may seem odd with his formerly extravagant lifestyle. But, Roderich hates waste. He's the sort of man who will mend all his old clothes rather than throw them away, and will happily wear old boxers with a sewn-on patch to cover up a whole rather than bin "a perfectly good pair of underwear!" Work || It's a necessary evil to Rod. He would much prefer to continue living off "vati und muti"'s funds, but that's not happening at the moment. So, unfortunately, he has to work. Much to his displeasure. Photographs / cameras / the press || They invade his privacy all the time. And that's just rude! The "outdoors lifestyle" || Far too used to five star luxury and the like, Roderich is not exactly "at one with nature". He much prefers the city lifestyle. Not looking his best || One must look presentable at all times! If not, it is mortifying to be spotted outside! Roddy is a bit vain, though. By the way, those glasses he wears are not something he actually needs. He wears them because he thinks it makes him look better. Also, he spends a long time every morning styling his naturally dead straight hair to make it the slightly wavy appearance most people are used to. Technology || Oh dear. Roderich is like an old man sometimes. He just does not understand technology, and has gotten through many smart/iPhones over the years, due to the fact he often ends up smashing them against a table in frustration. He's just as bad with iPads, tablets, music players, computers/laptops... etc. Pop/techno music || Correction, it does not classify as music. Just a loud, thumping racket of a bass and some dull, tuneless little ditty played on loop. Dirt || Because he's a neat freak. Enough said. Exercise || His lack of priorities means Roderich is often too lazy to drag his butt to the gym, thus he is a bit out of shape now. Mingling with "lower classes" || Wow, Rod. You're such a snob. |

Find true love || Well... he believes he already has. Maybe this should be re-phrased to "re-kindle true love". But yes, this is his ambition. Sappy, isn't it? Retire in wealth || Doesn't everyone want this? Especially a man who is used to living a life of money and power. Become a famous musician || It's his ideal job - one he would do because it's his passion, rather than for making money. One of these days, he'll quit psychiatry and just play his piano all the time. Start a proper family || Imagine a junior Roderich Maximilian Amadeus von Edelstein, and maybe a little Theresa Emilia Sophie von Edelstein... and another five other kids after that. They could be the new Von Trapp family! Be his own man || So he doesn't have to rely on anyone else any more. He wants to quash his least favourite personality flaw and become stronger. He wants to be a proper man for the people he cares for. | Marine animals || ...They're just really creepy, okay? Because of this, he tends to avoid ever going into the sea. Besides, you have no idea what's in the water... Probably some slimy, foul biting fish. Disgusting! Going deaf/injuring his hands || It would shatter his world, as such an injury would affect his ability to hear or play music. Such a thought is truly sickening to Roddy. Another failed marriage || Seriously, this guy has been married and divorced so many times. It seems he has serious problems with sustaining a relationship, and he hates the thought of more heart-break and even more divorce settlements. Going bankrupt || The humiliation that would come with that if he was a). to loose all his money, and then b). have people find out about it... Poor old Roddy wouldn't know what to do with himself. |
Background |
Austria no longer has a monarchy or a true nobility, however the von Edelstein family is probably the closest you can find to that in the country. Born in Vienna, Roderich Maximilian Amadeus von Edelstein was the only son of Wolfgang and Vikotria, and was the apple of their eye. He was, in many ways, a bit of a prodigy. Highly intelligent with a natural aptitude for music, he was already reading works by Sigmund Freud at the age of 8, and playing piano concertos not much later than that. The parents doted on their beloved son, and he grew up getting everything he ever wanted in life. In fact, he almost grew too accustomed to the lifestyle, something which in later years would come back to bite him. He attended one of the top schools in the country – the British International School in Vienna. It was here that he met his best friend; a boy by the name of Vash Zwingli. The two became fast friends, and practically grew up together as brothers. Of course, as most children do in international school, Vash moved away. But, Roderich and him remained close friends, and Roderich’s family would often pay for Vash to fly out to Vienna during the school holidays. His intellect got him far, and after finishing school he was offered a place at Oxford to study psychology. It was here he met a beautiful Hungarian woman named Elizabeta, and it was love at first sight. For the first time in his life, Roderich had found someone who made his heart beat faster than usual. Roderich was lucky, really. He wasn’t much of a man, yet somehow he was able to woo the woman, despite his flaws, before he even revealed his wealth to her. Roderich suddenly did not have to depend on his status to impress people, and he found he could just be himself around Elizabeta. They were a couple all throughout their years at university, and just before graduation he proposed to her. After they received their degrees, the two went off to Vienna for the wedding. Of course, Vash was the best man. It was the happiest day of Roderich’s life. Unfortunately, once the wedding was over, Roderich became aware that things were hardly perfect in his “dream world”. He had never really been aware of how much his darling Elizabeta was suffering, or how much his parents were making her life miserable. Not until it was far too late. And by then, well, he honestly did not have the guts to stand up to his mother and father, and protect his wife. Roderich was no knight in shining armour, and he knew it. He had tried to support her, really, he had, but his efforts were admittedly rather pathetic. He was not a strong man. The miscarriage had been the straw which broke the camel’s back, and their hearts. Roderich, overcome by grief over the loss of their first child, found even the small ounce of resolve he had to fight back against his overbearing parents wavering. He should have been there to support Elizabeta at the time, he knew, but he just couldn’t do enough. That had been it for Elizabeta, and she had walked out. No matter how much he begged for her to stay, her mind was made up, and there was no going back. The divorce papers were signed, and Roderich was left heart broken. Not long after that, Roderich fell into a deep depression as he tried to pick up the shattered pieces of his heart. In an attempt to numb the pain, he was quick to re-marry; a Spanish princess in fact. She was beautiful and loved Roderich, yet he knew he was being cruel by staying with her. He… had no interest. If anything, the marriage had just made the pain worse. So, only two months after the wedding, another set of divorce papers had been signed. Forcing himself into a romance had been unsuccessful, so Roderich attempted a different approach. A change of lifestyle. It was at this time that Roderich von Edelstein became famous in Europe, not from his family name, but from his playboy status. Women (and sometimes men), alcohol, drugs, gambling in Monaco, extravagant nights in hotel rooms which would be found completely destroyed the next morning, Roderich had and did it all. Like an over-grown child in a candy store, the sugar rush went to his head. His family were abashed, mortified to see the treasure of their eye on the front page of all the tabloids for his reckless behaviour. A third marriage had also appeared somewhere along the line after a drunken weekend in Vegas… Roderich can’t even remember her name now, he is ashamed to say. That marriage lasted no longer than a week before another divorce lawyer had been called in to fix the mess. His rebellious lifestyle was not going down well with all those around him. Even his best friend of years, Vash, eventually grew tired of coming to pick up a wasted or high Roderich from various shady nightclubs at 9am in the morning. The Swiss man severed all ties with Roderich, and that was that. No matter what he tried to do, Roderich found himself digging himself a deeper and deeper hole as he tried to put him mind off all the things which had hurt him. It was when he almost over-dosed that his parents finally put their foot down and told him "enough was enough" and that he needed to pull himself together. They came to an agreement: Roderich was to get his life on track. His parents said they would provide enough money for him to go back to university and continue his studies. But after that, he would have to completely rely on himself. He was never to go back to his parents, or ever ask for their help financially again. Essentially, Roderich had been cut off. The von Edelstein name meant that, by pulling some strings and making some agreements, Roderich was able to return to university and finish his Psychology course. Eventually, he graduated with a doctorate. After that, he was lucky. Roderich was able to become a psychiatrist and turn his life around, and next thing he knew, he was working for some of the most influential people in London (both on the side of the law, and against it). Instantly, he became one of the most respected Doctors in London: Dr. Edelstein, psychiatrist to the rich and powerful! Though... Roderich did have a secret. One which would ruin his reputation if it was to ever get out. It all came about when Roderich was approached by a police detective, requesting information on one of his clients. Of course, Roderich initially refused to reveal anything. However, when it was revealed a few days later that the patient had been involved in a crime which had resulted in the murder of a young family... Well, Dr. Edelstein was consumed by guilt. Maybe if he had revealed something, the police would have caught his client before that family had been killed. Yet, at the same time, he was still conflicted. After all, he did have his doctor-patient confidentiality code to withhold. When an MI6 agent came to him not so long after, requesting information, Roderich was still unsure. But... when the agent offered him a very large sum of money for the information... What can I say? Roderich von Edelstein is a greedy man with a certain way of life he wants to continue living. He began selling information to the highest bidder. His information came from socialising at various London parties with some of his wealthiest clients and, much more rarely but still from time to time, confidential knowledge which he has picked up from his sessions. "The Aristocrat", his broker identity, became just a famous name as "Dr. Edelstein", his civilian identity. Unlike many other brokers, he became one of the few most widely "respected" both with lawless and MI6, due to his complete legitimacy. There never is any doubt that the information he sells may not be accurate, and that's what gives him an edge. Mostly, he sells to MI6, however his loyalty does not fully lie to them. Whoever is willing to pay the most to "The Aristocrat" will be the one to get the information they so dearly desire. And now Roderich has London's intelligence in the palm of his hand. Recently, however, the Aristocrat has landed himself in an... interesting situation. A woman from child services showed up on his doorstep one day, claiming that Roderich had a son. The accident from his rebellious 17 year old self. Now, not only is Roderich trying to sustain his high-flying lifestyle, but is also acting as a single father who has been divorced three times. It's a good thing he has that second job, otherwise his psychiatry probably wouldn't cut it. |

“So, why don’t you tell me a bit about yourself?” Roderich leaned back in his seat slightly, the recline helping him to achieve a much more comfortable position as he observed his most recent client with piercing indigo eyes. The doctor had noticed how nervous the young woman seemed – the way she fidgeted slightly in her seat and how her eyes were darting around his modern office. Her behaviour… she was acting as though she was no more than a timid young animal who had been imprisoned in a cage. At that point, Dr. Edelstein carefully picked up his pen (a Parker fountain pen which caused the fluid black ink to flow freely like a tranquil stream) and began to scribble a brief note to himself about the woman’s current disposition. “You’re very quiet,” the blunt tone of his voice had shattered the silence instantly, and Roderich lazily glanced up away from the crisp sheet of paper to once more look at his patient. Her discomfort had yet to change, it seemed. “If you do not actually tell me anything, how do you expect me to help you here?” When he received no answer, Roderich simply sighed before standing up and making his way over to a small coffee table. There rested a pot of freshly brewed coffee and a selection of delicious, tiny cakes. “Coffee.” The Austrian’s voice reflected that it was not a question. No, much more of a statement. A command. The man had already taken the liberty to pour out two cups of the drink, and was now approaching the woman with one and the plate of desserts. She, of course, accepted and hesitantly removed a tiny slice of chocolate torte. Once she had settled down to eat her cake and sip at her coffee, Roderich simply picked up his own mug and returned to his previous seat. The two simply took a moment to enjoy the aroma and taste of the fresh brew, Roderich himself savouring every drop which ran down his throat. Ah~ that was excellent. “So,” Roderich began whilst adjusting his glasses. The coffee was gone now, his cup now resting on the surface of his desk. His throat was cleared with a small cough and finally, his eyes locked with those of his patient, who sent him a rather awkward but much less nervous smile in return. “Are you ready to begin now?” |
