The depths of the SIS building were home to a state-of-the-art laboratory. The depths of the inner Vauxhall area were home to a not-so-state-of-the-art library. However, the two places had a few of things in common. For one, Dr. Iliev happened to be a known face to both, the lab had a couple of cases of books he wasn't really interested in reading ever, and both locations could either be completely silent – so much so that one could hear a pin drop – or an absolute rat run. However, Marko very much preferred the lab to be quiet; it was a lot easier for him to work on his research without the machines whirring or the technicians' feet pitter-pattering here and there and everywhere... On the other hand, he liked the library a lot better during the specified hour that talking aloud was actually permitted. But that hour had come and gone, and once the last child had left the building with her parents after story time was over, the library was back to being just as quiet as it had been before. And then, it was just him. Alone. No kids tugging at the back of his shirt, no 'Doctor, Doctor, can you read this story?', or 'Doctor, that book sounds boring, can't you read something about dinosaurs?'... All that had to wait until the same time and day, the following week. It was times like that in which he found himself spaced out, staring blankly at the closed book in hand whilst he reached out to place it back in its rightful case... Times in which, in the stillness of the establishment, he stopped to fully comprehend there was life beyond the SIS building – beyond his job. “Shit.” He said, the book slipping from his hand and landing with a thud by his feet. Though, the word wasn't uttered under his breath, and apparently the librarian not too far away heard him and shot him a disapproving look. He grimaced back at her apologetically, before bending down and plucking the book back up... He really needed to stop doing that. | |
