Duna Mani A quiet, yet social secret-keeper with a knack for sneaking around and listening in on every conversation around him. He's something of a gentleman that sadly has gotten himself all tangled up in the wrong situations due to his fascinations with money. Warning: He will do anything for money. |

+Quiet: They say that there's always a quiet kid in big families that often gets forgotten about but is always the best one to come to if you have a problem and need their ear to spill everything. Well, Duna happened to be blessed or cursed (depending upon how you look at everything) with being the quiet child among his family. But don't worry, he has had his entire life to come to terms with when you are quiet, you sometimes get forgotten about and ignored. It doesn't bother him anymore and usually the only problem he runs into now is that some people mistake his silence for him being rude or just down right snotty. However, still lips possess a lot of talents and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, it pays some of his bills. +Gentle: Honestly, I don't think this guy could be anything but gentle in his expeditions. Count him evil or on the wrong side in your book and say whatever you want, but honestly, look at the guy, he can barely hurt a fly much less you or your family, or the world. Sure he looks all strong and muscular and no doubt he has the capability of being a big brute if he wanted to, but that's just it, he doesn't want to. Duna also has principles. Meaning, he's going to try and not get anyone in trouble more than he can help and more than anything he doesn't want anyone getting hurt. If he knows his information is surely going to get someone killed, he's probably just going to leave it out. Maybe. Depends. Well, not all the time but then he at least wants to and will try to help a victim. +Brotherly:Growing up in a household of many siblings along with others among his living conditions whom were just as much brothers and sisters to him as his own blood was, Duna was kind of forced into the art of being a big brother to everyone and anyone. As one of the eldest amongst the village children, he was charged with making sure everyone was kept safe and unhurt, that everyone was at least happy, and that everyone had a shoulder to cry on and the sympathy only an older sibling can provide. This instinct to reach out to those weaker and younger than him to protect them only grew as he got older and set off for distant London as a young man. Even now he will do anything to help someone he deems in need. +Social: Despite being really quiet and not having anything to say most of the time, Duna actually does love people and wants friends really badly. I mean, he is actually really open about all opinions and has no problem with culture differences. He just has a lot of trouble with the actual verbal part of making friends. If you get him around someone he knows and likes he might not shut up for hours and feed off their energy to make him great fun and particularly witty. He just needs to find someone he can click with like that before you will even hear two sentences out of him. +Hard-working: Anything he sets his mind to will be accomplished as long as he wants it enough and he uses everything in his power to reach it. At least, that's what he has always been told. According to Duna, you aren't meant to achieve anything without work and if you do, it's simply not an honorable thing to accept any earnings or feel proud about it. In fact, he often looks down on these types of situations despite always trying to be understanding of different ideals and thoughts. He just can't help it really, it's just not done in his mind. -Competitive:Everything he does must be that much better and delivered that much faster than whatever you can do. It's an internal tick to always be the most perfect and if perfection isn't in sight, than he has to get so close that you would never know the difference. He has always been like this, in everything he finds himself with an passion for and it just makes him that much better in whatever he chooses to set himself out to accomplish. Now, why is this bad? Well, for one thing he has been known to sabotage any other person he deems competition if things don't go exactly his way. This can cause a lot of hurt feelings and pretty much no one wins in these situations since Duna just feels really guilty later. It also causes a lot of stress on him. -Obsessive: Now, contrary to him being not interested in a task and quitting, if he actually finds himself liking what he is doing than everything takes a whole new twist. He becomes almost obsessive, looking for every way possible to do more of whatever it is he likes. For example if he suddenly finds himself with the possibility of earning a few more bits of information he will follow the source and story to the ends of the earth just to piece together everything he needs and make it something worth obsessing over. All you have to do is get him interested and riled up over something and set him on the trail and he will follow it till it's either complete or he kind of dies. -Curious: This is bad in the views that he uses his curiosity. Let's see, he's nosy into whatever you're doing whether it's talking about something particularly juicy in the back seat of his car, or talking to a friend in a bar, he wants to hear everything. Every. Last. Detail. This of course probably means your going to gain a stalker for a couple of hours if you don't happen to finish that particular enrapturing tale to your buddy in the bar. Duna wants to know everything and will do everything and anything to learn something new. -Too Nice: Now, I know that you are probably thinking this guy isn't such a sweet angel after all considering he will throw you to the sharks for a few pieces of money that will buy him a week's worth of food. But, setting money aside for a moment, just take a step back for a moment and really do survey him. Duna is truly a nice guy (or at least he tries to be) and if it is any consolation, he does feel guilty about a lot of his actions. For example every secret that he sells causes a pang of guilt that takes him quite a while to get over. He also won't tolerate any harm coming to anyone in his proximity although he usually doesn't have much say in the matter. It' s just this niceness also works the other way around as well. He has issues with saying no and if that isn't enough to get him even deeper into everything, I don't know what is. -Snoop: Ok, stop. Before you even utter a word about how you double crossed this stupid gang banger or did something stupid like steal from an agent, just think about who could be listening around you and where you are going to put your bag where you can see it. Because I can guarantee you that if you interest Duna, you are going to awaken his obsessive side and with his obsessive side comes his curiosity and with that comes the fact that it is perfectly normal and alright socially to steal someone's backpack or purse and go rummage through it like you own everything. Some things just don't stick when you are growing up and this little polite gesture of leaving stuff that's not yours alone jut never really sunk in. So, just think. Because chances are he will hear you at some point and if you have anything of value, it will be taken. |

~Soccer: Quite a popular sport that he grew up with and has loved since the first time he picked up a soccer ball. It was one of those things he found himself becoming obsessed with until all his free time outside of school and work was devoted to just playing soccer and nothing else. Luckily for him, he often found companions to play with and even found it his one sole task to teach anyone willing how to play regardless of the day, weather, time, or clothing he has on his body at the exact moment. ~Dancing: Duna only has fond memories of dancing in festivals and celebrations with his family and cannot find it in himself to hate the one thing that once brought him closer to everyone around him. In fact, he childishly still believes that if he dances with someone he will form a bond with them and will even take to calling them brother or sister. ~Lions: Ever since he was a little boy, he has found himself fascinated with these dangerous predators of the savanna despite everyone else around him being terrified. It was set in him to fear them of course, but that never stopped him from listening to their calls in the darkness and imagining the cruel grace as they went about their business. He looked at lions the way some boys admired a pretty girl or a particular sport they loved. In fact, it was one of the first things he did when he came to London, march himself straight to the zoo and spend the afternoon watching the lions with fascination. Later he bought himself a lion plush that he treasures even to this day. ~Being in the "know": It's simple really, Duna likes knowing things you don't. It's exactly one of the reasons he became a broker in the first place, a chance to learn stuff and then sell it at his own discretion. Of course he never bargained for the actual danger and fear of this little game he started playing, but he's not going to complain as long as the words start rolling in along with the money. Hey, he's poor and he's good at what he does. What's wrong with just using his talents for a little bit more to buy food with? ~Money: In case you haven't noticed yet, Duna's entire life is ruled by the little pieces of paper and coins that is accepted as currency. Being a poor kid, he always had a fascination with the stuff that he saw foreigners and people in power carrying. This obsession only grew when he actually had to start depending on it to survive in this new environment of the city. He discovered that the more money you had, the better you lived and he loved living well instead of the alternative and so set out to make more money. In other words, whatever gets him the most cash will win him over in a heartbeat. ~Heat: Duna just wasn't built for the cold. He absolutely loathes it and sadly he's stuck in a place that happens to be a bit harsh when it comes to chills. Don't be surprised to walk into his apartment and be boiling in minutes, he keeps the thing as far as he can without breaking budget (he breaks it anyway) and will still walk around wearing a sweatshirt. He'd rather be overly hot than be freezing cold and chooses to sweat than to shiver. Don't even get him started about going outside when it's cold outside. Only when it's inevitable with as much clothing on as possible. | ~Secrets: Oh how he despises any secret he himself doesn't know about. Now, if you knows everything about that little secret you are talking about, than it's no longer a secret to him and therefore just a secret to everyone else. Which, of course, is perfectly all right. Now, if he doesn't know about it he will learn about it. One way or another, Duna will know whatever it is you are keeping from the world. ~Loud noises: They scare him. Pretty much 'nuff said. Gun shots, screams, all kinds of violent noises terrify him and anything that's sudden or loud scares him even more. He's just a naturally jumpy person. ~Rudeness: Okay, it's expected that if he's nice to you, you should be nice to him. Simple really. He hates being talked down to or just treated like dirt and usually can't find it in himself to love these people. Now, don't even get him started on being rude to your elders. That is something he absolutely can not stand. At all. Seriously, he will go off if you are rude to an elder. ~Not being trusted: This frustrates him to no end seeing how he looks at everything with the logic of "why would I lie?". He understands not being trusted though he just finds it bothersome to have to prove himself before he gets his information passed on and his payment. ~Seeing pain: Principles are principles. He doesn't want to see anybody dead before their time and he mostly doesn't want to see anyone suffer before they die. Now that doesn't mean he's going to put them out of their misery. No, Duna just doesn't want any of this to happen at all and will try to deter it if he can or if he is in the position to . |
Dreams | Fears |
~Being the best soccer player: It's a dream he has had ever since he was a little boy that drove him to be the best he could ever be. Even now, with all the work he finds on his plate, he manages to find time to play soccer by himself and practice all his skills so he doesn't lose them to laziness. He hopes to one day return to Cameroon and play on his nation's team and still looks for older leagues around London to play with or at least someone who will scrimmage with him. ~Owning a lion: Okay a silly dream fit for a two-year-old, but hey, ever since Duna heard about some rich people around the globe owning creatures like leopards and cheetahs, he's dreamed of owning a lion. First he just needs to get the money of course. For now he settles for his little plushie that he affectionately calls Kokolo. ~Having many good friends: The kid who was forgotten about has always had this dream for as long as he could remember. When he was in the village it was fine since everyone knew him and loved him, but when he went to that school and eventually on to London, Duna realized just how alone he is in the world. Therefore he is working on trying to be known and liked by everyone, and impressive if only slightly impossible feat. | ~No one will like him: Since he is really quiet and he isn't good at really potraying stuff. Because hey, nothing says I want to be your friend like taking someone's purse and looking through it, He doesn't want to be alone when he dies and he honestly doesn't want to be that sad case where no one shows up at the funeral even though he had lost of friends and that no one will remember him after about a week of being gone. ~He'll be stuck in one place forever: This is honestly one of his biggest fears in the world. He honestly hates feeling tied down to a certain place and doesn't like the prospect of spending your entire life in one place and never seeing anywhere else. While some people may find that comforting, it just scares Duna. ~He'll never be remembered: Since he was forgotten occasionally as a child, Duna has always had a fear that no one will ever remember him as soon as he leaves. |
Background |
Duna Mani was the second child of six born to two proud parents in a secluded village located in the country of Cameroon. It is actually unknown his birthday since it is not very common, especially in villages, for people to celebrate birthdays. Although nowadays, he will inform you unofficially that he took May 20th as his date of birth while he is no longer in Cameroon. Anyway, he was perhaps one of the most vocal and fussy babies that ever existed. Or at least, according to his mother that was how it was. She told the story that Duna never stopped screaming until about the age of three, when the next baby came along. From than on he became more calmer and obliging to everything little kids are suffered through and he just simply remained that way. As a kid he was sometimes jokingly teased about using up all his air by screaming for three years and even now he can't help but become amused when he hears about him always being so quiet. But, despite coming off as a rough start, Duna did have as happy a childhood as there could have ever existed. Sure there was always stuff that he didn't like and as always he occasionally pitched fits over stuff, proving to the village that he did in fact never lose his will and screams in the first place. However, it was simply not tolerated by a busy working mother with more children coming and more around her that she could barely take care of from the start. When everyone else was so vocal, Duna couldn't help but just become background noise and while some kids who have pushed for their share of attention, he was just too gentle to push for anything. He was actually ignored by his family for a long time and it was at this time in his life that he first made his debut to the village and became known by everyone as the sweet-natured quiet child. And, even better, as he got older he even took their children for them. It was unclear when he first became the one in charge of everyone, the little babysitter in the hierarchy of childhood, but Duna managed to secure his seat as the little children's leader and therefore increased his popularity with the village people even more. To the best of his ability he kept everyone out of trouble and found it only easier to do as he aged and became bigger and more able to truly keep an eye on everyone wtihout getting distracted. It was at this time that he was finally allowed to take everyone out to the game fields and was fully trusted with the care of those under him. However, good things don't always last forever and soon Duna wasn't able to spend the entire day with his charges but instead sent to the village school and to work in the fields. He found it much more harder to find time to look after the children, and for a while he stopped being the mature adult and simply just worked, went to school, and played soccer. He absolutely excelled at everything especially the academics and it wasn't long before he started getting to old for the common school. It was then that the private school in a distant port city took an interest in him and gave him the scholarship that would change his life forever. After a few more short weeks he would leave his family and home for what would be forever, although it wasn't known at the time. With much sadness Duna was sent off to live with a distant uncle who had made a name for himself as a merchant and began attending school in the big leagues. Away from the village, Duna became even more shy and secluded out of partial fear of all the hustle and bustle and the fact that he knew nobody in his new school. It was terrifying for a boy who hadn't even gone further than walking distance from his village to be thrust so suddenly into a much different place and he suffered for it. Yet, he somehow managed and at the same time juggled making his uncle happy with the labor he had been forced into to help pay for his room and board. Or, at least that's what his uncle claimed happened to his wages. And eventually Duna was once again nearing his end of school with more possibilities this time. He was determined to go to London now and leave Cameroon to see the new sights after graduating from the private university. He began pooling all of his money that he had collected together and even started secretly working extra jobs until he could find enough money to get himself to London. It helped that he had enrolled in the exchange student program when he had left and managed to succeed in his efforts through hard work and a considerable amount of luck. Duna soon found that the city here was much different than back home and before long he was out of whatever money he had left and on the streets, something extremely dangerous considering they could have sent him back to his country if they had caught him. Yet, he manged to hang on and listen around for any jobs, gathering some information along the way. He scored a few jobs and began making some meager money again when he turned to thievery and quite by accident, becoming a broker. He had happened to be listening to a conversation when he had heard something about wanting to know information about a subject Duna had covered long ago. For once he spoke up and with a teasing smile that seemed to shout he knew it all, he told them quite simply that he knew everything about that. Surprised and very suspicious, they didn't trust him at first until it was finally clear that he had no reason to lie and that they really needed to know the info he could possibly give them. So, they took a chance and offered him money for his information. Duna complied and found himself that much more richer in the pocket for a listening business that took him less than a conversation to learn about. He wanted in and he silently but willfully pushed himself into the business. It was hard of course, considering his first clients were fools to trust a complete stranger to tell them a story, but he made it and now he makes enough money to send even some more home to his family and village. Whether it reaches them or not, he isn't sure but either way he's trying and hopes to make it home before he somehow gets killed. He's just glad that the money keeps coming and he was able to drop his theivery from his agenda. That helps with the whole " I don't want to get killed" idea. |

"Duna! Duna! Come look a this!" Squealed a young child, wrenching on the older one's arm with all the force he could muster out of his little body in the excited frenzy to get his current babysitter's attention. "You have to come see! I think it's a lion or maybe even one of those dragon men from the old stories gran tells!" Smiling, Duna allowed himself to be pulled by the little boy towards the edge of their soccer field and towards the bushes where the village ended and the terrifying wilderness started. Glancing wearily at the brush, the boy stopped the small one with gentle force and grabbed him by the shoulders to force him to meet his gaze. "Have you been playing away from the village again, Lakin?" He questioned sternly, glancing from the little boy to the bushes where the supposed lion was. Ever since all of the younger children had discovered Duna's fascination with lions when he had been telling them a story, it was like they had made it their mission to find a lion for him. It was quite touching if it wasn't for the fact that one of them could possibly get really hurt and it would be all Duna's fault, something no one would ever let him forget in his entire life. "No...." Lakin mumbled, staring at his bare feet as he scuffed them against the hard dirt. It had been so long since it had rained last and everyone had been suffering, the livestock and the meals for everyone were so scarce now. Duna sighed, taking in the little boy's too skinny figure with a critical gaze. "Lakin you know you aren't supposed to go in there. After this I'm going to need you to sit where I can see you for a while, okay? But how about you take me to this lion first?" The little boy's eyes brightened instantly and he flashed his older friend a huge smile before turning and grabbing his hand once more to pull him ever closer to the bushes. "Go ahead, look!" He shouted gleefully, releasing Duna so he could point a small little finger at the bushes. Smiling, Duna pushed away any rational fears to peek into the bushes and laughed as he pulled out his soccer ball with a little picture of a lion scratched in it. "I got gran to do it!" Lakin squealed, enjoying his babysitter's surprised and happy expression. "Do you like it?" Duna paused to turn the ball over in his hands, feigning mock disappointment for a moment before breaking into a big grin. "I absolutely love it Lakin." He purred, bouncing it on one knee and doing a few more tricks for the little boy's amusement. "How about we test it out for a while? You can be the first person to learn with it so special now." Nodding furiously, Lakin raced off towards the soccer field, leaving Duna to laugh and follow at a much slower pace, turning the ball over in his hands thoughtfully. "Are you ready? Are you ready?" The little boy called eagerly, bouncing in excitement at the prospect of learning some new tricks. "Of course." Duna replied, and bounced the ball high into the air. "I'm always ready, but are you?" And with a small little tap of his foot, he gently kicked it to his companion. |
