Kiku is reserved and polite, which many people take for shyness, a behavior stemming from his mother and mentor. He is kind to most people and generally welcoming, though he isn't much of a joker and tends to be a little more serious on certain matters. The closer you get to Kiku, the more imperfections you will discover and the more human he will appear. While Kiku does not in general joke, he has a mild layer of sarcasm that only those who are close to him can ever truly discover. Kiku is fairly hardworking and used a great deal of effort and work to reach where he is today. At the same time though, his consummation with success has left him feeling somewhat empty about his life. Now that Kiku has a stable job and time to reflect, he feels as if he has very little left to reach for in his life. Most of Kiku's younger life was spent trying to work hard to be able to continue surviving and keeping those he cared for alive. Now, without the significant pressure, Kiku can sometimes feel a little hollow inside. One of Kiku's greatest attributes is how levelheaded and calm he manages to be, regardless of the situation present. No one's ever seen him get truly angry and the calm and caution he exercises has made him an extremely professional person to deal with. Some accuse him of being almost robotic in his inability to become angered, which Kiku is unsure as to whether or not he should feel hurt or alright about. Kiku is smart, but in his own opinion, is in no way a genius. Kiku states that he had to work harder and more than everyone else to do half as much and attributes most of his success to hard work. Kiku is a keen observer and pays close detail to what's happening around him. This can be attributed to his childhood, where he was required to react quickly, as well as his agent training. Kiku has a sense of pride that is occasionally difficult for him to overcome. Having been alone and working mostly on his own for a great deal of his life, Kiku tends to find it difficult to bring himself to ask another for assistance. This was further implanted during his four years as agent, where he learned to trust no one and focus on completing solitary missions. His pride is worst when it comes to something that Kiku knows he is good at doing. If the subject is regarding a matter at which Kiku has little or no experience handling, Kiku will not hesitate too much to ask for help. However, if it's a matter that Kiku should know, he will stubbornly refuse help, even if it is much needed. Interestingly, Kiku can drink a great deal of wine before getting drunk (though as a rule, he never does...or at least not on purpose). When he gets drunk, he is a completely different person and descends into a "swearing, drunken, puking, slobbery mess." As a result of this, Kiku only sips small amounts of champagne at most parties and excuses himself when the inebriated become the majority. Like all politicians as well as former agents, Kiku is a very effective liar. While Kiku may be somewhat more moral than his fellow colleagues, he is in no way an honest man leading an honest life. He feels very little guilt over lying and can do so easily without much regret. Kiku generally tends to lie mostly on the business spectrum. However, he is a little odd about lying, being only willing to lie when the truth can absolutely not be told. He also has a tendency to lie about his emotions. |

Food: Kiku enjoys food of all kinds, as long as it tastes good. For a brief while when he first arrived in England, Kiku planned on opening a small restaurant of his own, though he sadly noticed that Japanese cuisine wasn't as popular as he wished in England. He loves most cuisine, though he is somewhat disappointed in England's lack of variety and choice. Pets: Kiku loves almost all pets excluding snakes. His favorite pet is anything soft and furry and he doesn't mind going to a greater extent to care for his pets or animals. Dogs: Kiku holds a certain fondness for dogs above other pets. During his childhood, Kiku had very little warmth in his life. He always adored dogs and wanted to be loved, but he was never permitted to own a dog by his mother, sensei, or the agency. Two years ago, when Kiku finally retired from the agency, he decided to finally find himself a dog. Returning to the new apartment that the government had secured for him, Kiku found himself staring at the pet store at a young, half Akita half Shiba Inu puppy. It was love at first sight and after naming the dog Pochi-kun, the two have yet to leave each other's side. Bonsai Trees: While Kiku enjoys many plants, his favorite is the bonsai tree. When he started his government job, his time freed up a bit and Kiku ended up investing a great deal of time into trimming and perfecting his bonsai trees. Why Kiku loves the tiny trees is a bit of a mystery, though it is a sign of who he is and who he used to be. Martial Arts: Kiku loves the martial arts that he learned from his sensei back when he was younger. Indeed, these were the very skills that brought him to the attention of the Agency. While Kiku no longer uses his skills as a method of earning money, he does practice them regularly at sunrise on the weekends. He finds it a way of relieving himself. Kiku is well practiced in a number of martial arts and weaponry. He does look down a little on tai chi, which he regards more as an old man's relaxation than martial arts. He has admitted that it might be good for his back pains though. Tea: Kiku loves tea to an obsession. He loves all sorts of tea, ginger, chai, chamomile, etc. Generally he prefers the tea that originates in Japan, but he drinks almost all tea. He has also taken a liking to ice tea, which he used to feel was simply a cheap rip off of true tea. Cleanliness: Kiku is big on cleanliness. While he does get disorganized from time to time, Kiku is very strict on being clean and neat, believing that it leads to organization of both the soul and the mind. He claims to work better in neater conditions and believes it aids him as a person overall. Superstitions: Kiku isn't overly superstitious in his opinion, but he's definitely got his beliefs. He doesn't really have a religion but certainly believes in karma, one of the reasons why he is so often polite and kind to others. He's very particular about respecting elders and can be quite astonished at how rudely certain teenagers are towards those older or of higher status to them. While not believing in a specific god, Kiku does believe in the after life. He just really hasn't determined what exactly that constitutes. Traditional Medicine: Despite the fact that it tastes, smells, and looks a whole lot worse, Kiku is a strict believer in traditional medicine, scoffing at western interpretations and quick solutions. He believes that traditional medicine offers a much better interpretation and is a long-term solution to ailments that he believes western medicine is unable to cure. Anime/Manga: As a child, one of Kiku's few free and constant entertainments was the manga books at the comic book store which he would sneak into and read. It was his main way to get out of the real world and into a fantasy, something that helped him cope with the desperate situations his family was in. When Kiku moved to England, he discovered that there was a whole lot more in the world of manga that he'd never known of, including anime. He indulges in it more than he'd like to admit on weekends. | Suicide: Kiku frowns heavily upon suicide. After his father's suicide, Kiku had to bear a great deal of the burden in order to keep his family alive and healthy. He believes that suicide is the cheater's way out of a hard situation, which he firmly believes can be remedied by hard work. At fourteen, shortly after his father's death, Kiku made a pact to never commit suicide, regardless of the circumstances. Needles: Kiku detests needles, though not to a point of fearing them. He simply doesn't see the point and why mankind chooses to inject themselves in such a way. He is wary of them, though he grudgingly allows himself to get a flu shot once a year. Tattoos: Stemming from his hate of needles, Kiku doesn't understand the point of tattoos and while he would never publicly say so, doesn't really approve of them. He understands they're a form of a expression, but cannot on his life imagine why one would choose to have needles pointlessly stuck into them in that manner. Smoke: Kiku is very cautious about the environment and what happens in it. He hates smoke as well as smokers, though he has slowly become accustomed to it. This is partially why he likes England--smoking is banned in public buildings. The City: While Kiku can tolerate the city and accepts the convenience, accessibility, and advantages, Kiku would much rather live in the countryside where he'd have much more space and freedom. He'd much rather spend his days in a beautiful garden than in a cluttered and noisy metropolis. Physical Contact: While Kiku accepts the fact that physical contact is necessary to expressing emotion and love, he is a little touchy about it. Much preferring to shake hands than to hug, this causes Kiku to strike some as formal or overly cold. This mainly stems from the fact that as a child, Kiku had little obvious love from his busy parents and still remains a little awkward in social situations today. |
Dreams | Fears |
Forgiveness: Kiku feels immensely guilty about not being with his mother when she died and not supporting her more in her life. He seeks forgiveness from her above all else, only wishing for her approval. Sadly, he is well aware that he is unlikely to ever receive her forgiveness. Family: As a child, Kiku had family, albeit a disjointed and disappointing one. He feels this lack keenly and someday wishes to have a family of his own, whether it consists of his real family, his friends, or his pets. He seeks the warmth that family brings and occasionally aches for it and the fact that he may always be alone. Friends: In his search for success, Kiku failed to leave time for social interactions other than those necessary to establish political and useful contacts. As his business life has begun to become less consuming, Kiku feels a little lonely sometimes and wishes for someone he could talk to easily without worrying. Romance: Kiku is a little awkward about romance, having never truly experienced it himself. He doesn't want a purely sexual relationship either--he wants someone who really cares about him and really wants the best for him. Kiku readily admits that it's unlikely that will happen at any time and feels resigned to the fact that really, he's rather clueless. Still, Kiku would really rather not die alone. Become Foreign Secretary: When Kiku first started working in foreign affairs, he was awed by the head of the office, the Foreign Secretary. This quickly became his goal in the oncoming months as he stormed ahead of the competition, often working harder and longer in order to achieve his goal. Lately though, Kiku has started to loosen his grasp on this dream a little bit, though he remains hesitant to completely let it go. Find a Dream: Lately Kiku has been reflecting more on himself and is wondering what exactly he wants to accomplish in his life and career. He is unsure of himself and now that he's reached a good point in his career, he is unsure where he wants to head. While he used to work hard for success and to survive, he now works hard for a larger paycheck. Kiku feels a little distressed at this point in his life and is unsure as to where it will head. | Anger: Kiku has never truly been angry before and is consciously aware of this fact. This is why his own anger is so terrifying to him. He's often considered and wondered what would happen if he were to accidentally blow up at someone. Cockroaches: Kiku has seen too much of these hideous, creepy little crawlers for his own good, having lived in poor conditions as a child. However, Kiku has no interest in ever experiencing the terror again. On the rare chance that he sees a cockroach, Kiku is apt to puke, cry, and call the exterminator. Claustrophobia: Kiku is somewhat claustrophobic, which is why he wishes to live in a decently sized house in the countryside some day. This is manifested also in Kiku's shyness about hugging, which he feels is similar to being restrained and captured. |
Background |
Born in the very heart of Tokyo, Kiku grew up in a poor family with several other siblings. As the eldest of the family, Kiku spent a great deal of time trying to support his family by working on the street. He also helped out at home as much he possibly could. His father worked as a chef in a small restaurant and his mother worked as both a waitress in the same restaurant and the cashier in a grocery store. As a child, Kiku was extremely smart for his age and skipped a grade when he was younger. When Kiku was nine, his father's restaurant went bankrupt, forcing both his father and mother to find additional jobs. His father ended up as a factory worker and his mother took on a full-time shift as a cashier. It was during this time that Kiku picked up his skills in cooking in order to take care of his younger siblings. Despite the family's struggles to pay bills, Kiku's mother desperately tried to keep some order in the house and insisted on manners and politeness regardless of their circumstances. Through Kiku and his mother's desperate measures, they managed to keep some semblance of order in the family. Five years later, Kiku's father lost his job again due to a financial crisis. Having lost the one job he loved as a chef and despairing for his life, he committed suicide, leaving Kiku and his mother alone to take care of his younger siblings. The fourteen year old Kiku quit school to aid his mother and found ways of scrounging money for the family while studying at night when his siblings had gone to bed. When Kiku turned fifteen, his mother gave him a letter from Hiroshi Tanaka, a master of the martial arts, informing them that he had accepted Kiku as his student and was willing to teach him martial arts as well as continue his studies. In joy, Kiku left his family to pursue a possible career in the martial arts. Under Tanaka's teachings, Kiku excelled in both the martial arts and his studies. During his travels to compete in tournaments, Kiku also became fluent in English in order to communicate with more ease. Kiku was too busy to visit his family on a regular basis but sent them checks from earnings he received from tournaments he'd won. Two years into his training, Kiku's mother passed away from pneumonia. Kiku grieved and felt immense guilt for abandoning his family for training as well as being too busy to visit them. He argued for custody of his younger siblings but was denied due to his young age. He later found out his mother had made similar arrangements for them a year ago and had found people to take care of them as well. Kiku returned to Tanaka and continued his learning. A year later, when Kiku had completed his training, he decided to use his competition savings to buy a ticket to England where he decided his new life would be. At 18, Kiku struggled to find a sustainable job as a martial arts expert in England. For three years, Kiku rented a cheap single room apartment while working two jobs and attempting to study at night. Finally, after Kiku was accidentally involved in a bar fight, he was hired by the MI6 as an agent thanks to his martial arts skills. Life after becoming an agent became somewhat easier for Kiku and he ended up perfecting his English, French, and German, learning in the process that he had a knack for languages. Through Kiku's four years as an agent, he became much more skilled with numerous weaponry. He rose quickly in ranks, becoming a surprisingly valued agent in the field. For a brief period of time, Kiku was known for his unique style as an agent, being agile and quiet in his missions. He managed to stay below the radar as a person, though his codename was fairly well known. During his last year as an agent, Kiku ran into a spat of trouble during a mission. A man that Kiku originally believed he had dealt with managed to sabotage the operation, leaving Kiku in a bad situation. Kiku managed to make it out alive but the confrontation resulted in an injured spine. Before the surgery, Kiku was told that he had a high chance of either not surviving or being paralyzed permanently. He was convinced to go through with the surgery and the operation was successful. However, Kiku was also informed that the damage done to his spine wasn't completely reparable and any prolonged work as an agent would seriously jeopardize his life. Kiku was at a loss for a brief period of time before his superiors informed him that they would be able to secure him a comfortable job in the government. After serious contemplation, Kiku decided to go with Foreign Affairs, which is where he felt that his skill with languages would come most in handy. For the first two years in his time in Foreign Affairs, Kiku worked his hardest. This was mainly to keep his mind off of his original career as an agent and the disappointment he felt that he was no longer fit to complete his original job. The hard work and dedication he had as an official showed in his ranks as he quickly became a well-respected man in his field. However, recently Kiku has begun to falter. With his past mostly behind him, Kiku is struggling to find where he wants to go with his life and his career. Now that he can afford to slow down and begin to think, Kiku is unsure as to what he wants to do. |

Clickety clickety, clack. The sound of high heels and rolling suitcases, stamping stamps and tapping boots. The sound of an airport. "Sir, please look at the camera...?" A few seconds later, his passport was back in his hands. The man at the desk smiled. "Welcome back to Japan, Mr. Honda." Kiku gave the man a brief smile and pulled his carry-on behind him. A few short minutes later, he was standing in the hot sun and waving down a cab. The driver came out and grabbed his small suitcase to be placed in the trunk while Kiku seated himself in the back. Kiku stared out the window. He was finally here. In the cab, he finally managed to breathe. He was really here. Really, truly here. It was the first time he'd been back since he'd left Japan nine years ago. For some reason, in the past two years when Kiku had finally been able to travel around the world, he hadn't found the courage to return home. Finally, just a month ago, he'd been offered an opportunity. Not knowing whether or not it was the right decision, he'd gone for it. So much had changed about Tokyo. It had always been a busy city, but now it was a bustling metropolis. It looked prettier than before, but Kiku had seen its ugly side before and he wasn't eager to see it again. He watched the Tokyo Tower pass by before him. So this was home. Why didn't it feel the same? He guess it was because he himself had changed. Gone was the boy who was barely eighteen with only just enough money to buy a plane ticket. In his place was a successful man who had somehow made his way to the top, not only earning his keep but an excess of it. Kiku was a completely different person. He'd seen a lot on the streets of Tokyo, but he'd seen a fair share on the streets of London as well. How could it seem the same? He was completely different. "Why am I here?" he asked himself. There was no answer, and the driver was too polite to comment on it. Kiku's grip tightened on his pants. He didn't know. For once in his life, he was unprepared for where he was going, where he was heading. Fifteen minutes later, the taxi came to a stop. "We're here, sir," the driver said respectfully. Kiku nodded and gave the man a smile before handing him some money. "Thank you." The driver dipped his head and as Kiku shut the door, he drove off. It was a small place, flowers blooming everywhere. Pretty, indeed, but mostly empty. Kiku reached up to the nearest sakura tree, picking a few of the pink flowers. It didn't look like anyone was here. Well, mostly anyone. Kiku walked slowly amongst the rows, absorbing the names, trying to find the one he was searching for. Finally, he found the stone. He stood there, a little frozen for a moment. He didn't know what to do. He didn't know what to say. He hadn't been here in nine years, had barely even thought about it for longer than he could imagine. Kiku swallowed. Gosh, why was he here, why was he here? Slowly, Kiku knelt down in front of the grave stone, carefully laying the flowers down. He blinked twice and opened his mouth but no words came to his lips. Finally, he simply stayed there on his knees in silence. Then, in the emptiness of the graveyard, Kiku began to cry. |

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson went camping. At about nine at night, both crawled into their tent and soon fell fast asleep. In the middle of the night, John woke to Sherlock shaking him awake. "John," Sherlock said urgently. "Look at the sky and tell me what you see." John peered at the stars and remarked, "I can tell it's mid-May and about three AM in the morning. Judging by the alignments, we are in the Northern Hemisphere. Nothing particularly unusual except the time." Glancing at his watch, John was satisfied with himself and his accurate deduction until he found Sherlock shaking his head. "You idiot! Someone stole our tent!" |
