He puts people at ease immediately, and has a casual, unaffected air about him that makes it easy for him to make friends and conversation. +Careful More specifically, he is meticulous. He takes care of himself, his things, and always makes sure to finish what he starts. He calls all the shots regarding information exchanges, and he never gives his real name to clients. +Thorough When researching something, he goes to the core of it and finds out everything he can. This is what makes him a good broker; he has a natural curiosity and enjoyment for research that's compatible with the job. +Perceptive He's excellent at reading small signs. Little tics or mannerisms never escape him, which helps him manipulate people easily. He also keeps a close eye on his surroundings, to tell when a situation is suspect or something is about to go wrong. +Intelligent He wouldn't get by otherwise. He tries not to display this too much, since it often makes people uneasy, but he is far smarter than average. -Stubborn Matty is set in his ideas and ways. He doesn't change easily, and will not tolerate anyone trying to tell him how to think. This is a big reason why he doesn't want to belong to an organization. -Self-righteous His beliefs are set in stone, and though he doesn't advocate conventional "good," he's still very firm about it. He isn't pushy about it, but if you ask, he'll tell you his way of thinking and living is the only way to be truly decent. -Paranoid Maybe it's helped him stay safe, but it also prevents him from getting close to anyone. He always remembers that anyone could work for an organization or have an alliance of some sort. -Closed off He won't let anyone get close to him emotionally. It takes a long time to get under Matt's skin; don't expect instant romance or even friendship. He does not trust easily. -Acerbic Generally this doesn't apply, since he's pleasant to most people, but when you really get to know him, you'll find he has a biting sense of humor and can be downright cruel to people he thinks deserve it. -Information Both something he likes and a job, for him. He loves acquiring it (he's naturally curious), but will only share it for a price. -Travel Freedom of movement is everything. He has never seen or learned enough. There will always be more waiting out there. -Independence This is what he tries to achieve through his work. He gets information (not difficult), sells it, and uses the money to keep to himself and keep up his way of life. -Power Not necessarily power itself, but what comes with it. He can keep himself safe and untouched as long as he keeps the upper hand. -Neutrality Matt is 100% neutral in all affairs. This is nonnegotiable. He refuses to get involved in anything requiring him to take sides, and he's very difficult to blackmail. | -Guilt This is why he has to remain neutral. He doesn't like to feel guilty, but more than anything he hates being forced to that point. It makes him feel vulnerable. -Commitment Going along with independence. He can't be attached to anyone or he drives himself mad. He needs to be able to move and breathe. -Idiocy The quickest way to drive him away. Sometimes he finds it amusing, but mostly it flat out annoys him. -Lack of professionalism He prefers to keep his personal and professional lives completely separate. Don't ask him on a date. You'll get amusement at best, castrated at worst. -Self-righteousness He's an absolute hypocrite about it, but there it is. | -Being trapped This is his biggest fear. He does not want to be kidnapped or coerced into going anywhere. -Being found He works hard to lose any tails he acquires for this reason. This ties into his next fear, as well. -Identification As little emotional attachment as he has to them, he doesn't want his parents hurt. So he buries himself under a myriad of codenames and proxies, and leaves nothing behind. -Vulnerability All his fears tie into this. |

| [cs=3] Matthew's quiet, always has been. He doesn't think much about his past, doesn't like to talk about it, and for the most part he didn't have too rough a time of it, unless you count how introverted he was. He grew up in Ontario with American parents who were more Canadian than Yankee and who raised him to be a good, upstanding citizen. He went through the whole routine; went to a private school and learned his French like a good little bridge-the-gaps-for-our-future youth, but in truth nothing bored him like school. Everything was too easy, and it was a good thing there was plenty of French and computer science to learn, else he thought he might have died of boredom. He graduated, took a break year and hopped the pond to Europe. Being in Europe was so different from being in Canada. Matt picked up a temporary job in London that he liked enough to stay for. He has since quit that job and now works as a songwriter. After planting his roots, Matt dove headfirst into the gritty underworld of London and didn't look back. And soon enough, he discovered that people were willing to pay for things he could find out in a smokey bar or dark hotel, and he settled into his odd new double life. He had intended to go to college, but it never happened. He's been working as a broker ever since. |
