APPROVED | Welcome to TND. Your application has been accepted. Rosa looks like a real riot to be with. I love the previews into her interactions with Joachim and she seems like a force of nature whose bad side you want to stay off of! I really like how her fears and dislikes tied in with her history. It was an interesting read, and I do enjoy that for all the bad that’s happened to her she has enough spirit to continue being a joy to the people she loves. She’s a lovely character and although I don’t know much about Latin Hetalia, I can safely say I like Rosa and I think she’ll be a lovely addition to TND. I look forward to her hijinks!

| Rosa González Cortez "Elementary, my dear Watson~"
The "Watson" to Joachim Loïc van de Velde's "Sherlock", Rosa is a famous blogger on the internet who fills her website with the stories of various cases she and her... very close friend have solved together. |
Colombian | Van de Velde's companion, part-time waitress | Independent |
Hazel | Tanned (Latin) | Tall, voluptuous |
+ Passionate: If there is something she is interested in, Rosa puts her heart and soul into it. She is vibrant, often portraying strong feelings and emotions (which may be perceived as just being over-dramatic by most people). There is always enthusiasm in what she enjoys, and also very strong emotions in what she doesn't as well... Really, Rosa is just extremely dramatic, and puts a certain fire into all her feelings that makes them much more prominent and strong than most peoples'.
+ Maternal: Towards those she knows well, she is incredibly protective and cares deeply about that. Rosa is the sort of woman who will do things and try to convince others to do things as she sees it as something beneficial to them; something that will help them. She is the one who ends up doing most of the chores in the apartment she shares with Joachim Loïc van de Velde and so takes on most of the... responsibilities that go with it.
+ Carefree: Rosa is the sort of person who just loves to let her hair down. At night, she goes out to party. During the day, she spends most of her time relaxing (when not doing housework or trying to get Joachim out of bed and work on a case). She doesn't tend to stress too much about life, and much prefers to "go with the flow of wherever it might lead her". Also, she tends to have a positive outlook on things, and tries to see the good side of life. Even when the going gets tough. After all, that's when the tough get going, si?
+ Reliable: Si, Rosa will always stand by those she cares about and will always be there to lend a helping hand. Whilst sometimes she may not have the best solution to a problem, she will still try to find one to help someone she cares about when they're in need. Rosa is also very loyal, especially to her "room-mate". Even when he is refusing to work... which gets on her nerves. But even so, she keeps a smile on her face and will stand by him, no matter what.
+ Determined: The Colombian in dedicated, that is for sure. Rosa is not one to back down when things start looking difficult. She is a fighter in some respects. When she sets her mind on something, she won't back down unless there is absolutely no way she can continue. She is driven, especially in what she has a passion for.
~ Honest: This is a pretty good trait to have. Rosa is not one to tell a lie (unless completely necessary) and prides herself in being truthful. Unfortunately she can also be... brutally honest, and doesn't stop to think that telling someone they look awful in that dress (for example) isn't exactly the best move.
- Impatient: She tends to get pretty snappy if things don't run smoothly or go her way. It's best to keep on her good side when it comes to getting things done, and it's never a good sign when she starts tapping her foot or checking her watch. Rosa doesn't tend to wait around for people.
- Manipulative: Well, yes, Rosa is more than well aware about how to twist a situation to make it benefit herself in some way. This is a technique she uses on a certain house mate of hers when he is annoying her or won't agree to do something her way.
- Aggressive: Rosa Cortez is not afraid to punch somebody in the eye if they piss her off or insult her. Although most of the time, she is the one who starts an argument or insults somebody first. She is very forceful and even more confrontational, to put it simply.
- Nosy: Yes, Rosa tends to stick her nose in other people's business. A lot. Whilst she prefers to say she is "overly curious" there's only one way to honestly describe it. And that is she is completely nosy. End of story.
- Loud: Sometimes annoyingly loud. Shouting people down is her speciality, and my oh my, Rosa has got a large set of lungs. The Colombian has a nasty habit of blabbing all the time when she is not supposed to, or just shouting really loudly for no apparent reason. It is something that possibly gets on people's nerves. |
✓ Coffee: Rosa is completely addicted to coffee. Seriously, it is almost impossible for her to go a day without at least one cup. Whenever somebody is in need of a nice hot drink, she'll be at the coffee machine in a flash. And of course, Colombian coffee is by far the best type. ✓ Guitar: Si, Rosa plays classical guitar. She uses it as a stress reliever, and may sit by her window or on her bed just playing to herself various songs her family taught her when she was younger. She's pretty good at the guitar, but tends not to play it in front of others. ✓ Dance: Especially Latin dances! Samba, salsa, cha cha cha~ Even tango! Rosa attends a dance class once every week to improve on her dancing skills and might randomly start dancing when she's working in the kitchen... ✓ Festivals: Carnivals and parties are great fun, si! Who doesn't love a good old party or a song and dance, hm? Rosa certainly loves them with a passion. Whenever she sees a parade, carnival or party happening soon, she is the first to get there and would spend the whole night if she could. ✓ Alcohol: Yes, she does like the occasional drink. No, she is not an alcoholic. Seriously speaking, though, who doesn't like the odd Aguardiente?
✓ Birds: Rosa loves them, for some reason, and they are her favourite animals. Especially the tropical ones. She is currently trying to get her flat mate to agree to buying a pet parrot with her. To "liven up the home", apparently. ✓ Cooking: She is a very good cook. Luckily she enjoys it, seeing as Rosa is the one who does all the cooking in the household. ✓ Writing: Rosa loves writing with a passion, and has a very popular blog where she writes about her everyday life. It includes stories such as when she first arrived in London and the much more popular posts about the cases she has helped Van de Velde solve.
✓ Joachim Loïc van de Velde: Well, not that she'll openly admit it. They're partners, though, and she considers him her closest friend. | ✗ British weather: It sucks, to put it simply. There's far too much rain for her to bear!!! Rosa detests bad weather, and misses the much warmer climate of Colombia. ✗ Drugs: Rosa actually used to be addicted to Marijuana - something she refuses to talk about and is deeply ashamed off. She is clean now, but is constantly worrying about the temptation to start up again. ✗ Hangovers: Does this really need explaining? The one down side to alcohol is the next morning... Rosa hates hangovers. With a passion.
✗ Tea: For Rosa, it is a drink that is completely bland, tasteless and rather boring. No no, coffee is much better. She hates it when they don't have any coffee in the house and only tea instead. That's like... a sign of the apocalypse.
✗ Being treated like a maid: Just, no. If you want to get on her good side, great her like a proper lady would want to be treated and don't tease her about the fact she does all the cooking and cleaning. Or else you'll get hit over the head with a pot. Or anything else she can get her hands on.
✗ Cockroaches: Disgusting creatures! And they just won't die! At least you can kill off rats and other pests, but cockroaches are Rosa's "greatest enemy". She simply cannot stand them.
✗ Smoking: Rosa avoids anything addictive that reminds her of her former drug-using days. Smoking is something she puts in that category. Besides, don't people know how unhealthy it is?!
✗ FARC: They have caused more than a bit of trouble in Rosa's life. Calling them a pain in the ass is an understatement. Rosa loathes them!
✓ Joachim Loïc van de Velde: They may live together and be friends, but he still gets on her nerves a lot. |
✓ Become an Author: One day, she hopes that all her writings on her blog will be published in a book and recorded, like the tales of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.
✓ To own a parrot: ...Rosa just really wants one...
✓ Settle down: Rosa's a great big romantic at heart, and really wants to eventually settle down with the person she cares about. She keeps trying to hint things, but for a super-genius he doesn't seem to notice much!! | ✖ Explosions: She is paranoid about bombs, terrorist attacks and explosions. After a really terrible experience, she was completely shaken to the core and is still nervous whenever she hears about terrorist attacks or fires.
✖ The Viruñas: Rosa is pretty superstitious. In Colombian folklore, The Viruñas are considered to be the embodiments of Satan.... that in itself is a rather creepy thought, si?
✖ Heights: This fear is completely irrational and there is no logical explanation for it. Rosa just cannot stand being up high, and likes to keep her feet firmly planted on the ground. |
Born and raised in a small town about three hours outside of Bogotá, Rosa Catalina González Cortez had a rather simple childhood. Her family was not well off in the slightest, but her parents worked hard so they could send their daughter to school.
Rosa was a good student. She studied hard, and had made up her mind at a very young she that she wanted to be a doctor when she grew up, to make her family proud of her. It was an ambitious aspiration, especially coming from such a small town with a very high crime rate, but it was her goal. Life was rather simple for many years. Rosa continued her work at school, and was planning on getting a visa to study medicine in the USA.
At the age of sixteen, her life took a turn for the worse. Colombia is well known for having serious drug problems, and unfortunately for Rosa she got caught up in it. She started smoking cannabis, and was quickly addicted. Her grades started dropping and Rosa ended up in a very bad situation. She had to quit if she wanted a successful life.
When Rosa did get clean, it was a small miracle. Things went uphill from then on. She managed to get her visa and scholarship to study medicine in America after much hard work, and went to university to become a doctor. Again things were looking up. All was going well, and she was making her family happy.
During her first year, Rosa went back to her home town for vacation to visit her family. Whilst she was there, the place was attacked by FARC soldiers. An explosion in the town hall set off by them caused panic and serious injuries to the majority of the people. Unfortunately, Rosa was caught in the blast. Although she was not seriously harmed, the experience had a mental toll on her. She developed a serious twitch in her hand, which would leave her unable to preform medical duties. With much regret, she had to drop out of her course. Rosa even went back to drugs for a few years to see if they would help her nerves, but there was no such luck.
Rosa was getting to the stage where she knew she had to turn her life around, and fast. So, one day she made an on the spot decision one day. The Colombian packed her bags and collected all the money she had, threw out all her needles and anything that might tempt her and left home. She didn't stop to say goodbye to the family; Rosa just needed to get away. She made her way to the airport then bought a ticket to London. It was a choice she literally made without a second thought.
Upon arrival in the UK, Rosa had no money, nowhere to go and absolutely no plans. She stayed in a youth hostel for a few nights whilst trying to find a job and a cheap apartment, something virtually impossible to do in London. After a while, she met up with a family friend named Carmen, who took her in and gave Rosa a job as a waitress at the cafe she owned, until the Colombian was able to stand on her own two feet. Carmen became like a mother-figure to Rosa, and made the transition to British life much more easy.
Then, one day, she met a man named Joachim Loïc van de Velde. A strange turn of events later, Rosa found herself moving in with the man and soon, she was convincing him to become a detective, like Sherlock Holmes. She became his "Watson", and now spends her time either solving cases with him, writing a blog on the internet filled with these cases, or occasionally working at Carmen's cafe. |
Rosa was in desperate need of a place to live. Sure, Carmen had been really kind offering up her home to the Colombian, but it was beginning to feel like Rosa was becoming a burden on the Spaniard. Of course, she really didn't want that! Especially after all Carmen had done for her when she had first moved from Colombia to Britain. Now it was time for Rosa to stand on her own two feet and find a place for herself she could call home!
Of course, that was something much easier said than done. Particularly with the high prices of properties in London, compared to Rosa's currently very low salary. The whole prospect of renting, let alone buying, somewhere affordable was quite daunting to the immigrant. So, when she had come across an advert that morning in the paper mentioning a flat in Fritzrovia that was well in budget, Rosa had practically jumped with excitement and quickly made her way to said location.
Now, there she was, standing alone in the middle of the street appearing to be rather... confused. In one hand, she tightly held on to the cut-out from the newspaper, and in the other the Colombian clung her favourite handbag. Glancing around the area, Rosa could see no apparent "For Sale" signs, or spot any other people around to ask for help. "Ai yai yai," she sighed, clearly sounding exasperated. "Estoy perdido..."
Well, this was annoying.
The woman huffed in frustration and ran her hand through her hair, eyes once more glancing round to take in her surroundings. It was then Rosa clapped eyes on a building which looked a lot like the place in the advert. That had to be it! A smile finally returning to her face, the Colombian strode forward and onward with her quest. After finding the front door had been left unlocked, Rosa made her way inside and began searching for the apartment she had been interested in viewing. She went around, knocking on doors that were locked and peering in where they were left open. Most places seemed to be either unoccupied, or were closed anyway.
Eventually, she came across another door. Firstly she knocked, but no reply came. So, Rosa did her usual of letting curiosity get the better of her, and went to open the door herself. Surprisingly, it was also unlocked.
"¿Hola? I mean... hello?" Rosa called out, her thick accent ringing clearly in the air. She highly doubted that whoever was planning on selling their flat spoke Spanish, so she had to try out her rusty English. "Is anyone home?" |
