In a swift glance, one usually said that Megumi Kudo is a “yamato nadeshiko”; a woman who has the ideal traits of Japanese women. Yamato nadeshiko traits splitted into two categories: “Outer Softness” Polite: Treat the others as you want to be treated. Megumi maintained a lady-like public face; she would put a hand in her mouth when laughing, bowed down her head when saddened and politely excused herself when angered. Megumi was never one who displayed her emotions blatantly, especially if it may made her companion uncomfortable. And of course, manners did help her survive in industrial competition. Conservative: Although her job sometimes required her to wear revealing clothes, Megumi didn’t like wearing it outside the studio. Even her everyday clothes are rarely showing her upper arms and thighs. In a crowded train, she would feel very uncomfortable being near to others’ private space, especially the different gender’s. Megumi would blush if someone suddenly hugged her affectionately and mumbled about public display of affection in a low voice. Supportive: This woman was not a person who would hog the center stage all for herself. She would support her co-worker from behind and moving forward towards their goal together, especially to junior models who really worked hard to reach the top. Megumi felt they deserved a help, or maybe a reward. Loyal: Once you got into her close circle, she would try making room to be with you. She would keep all your secrets (and maybe some you never told anyone but she found out nonetheless) and stick with you through the hard times. Megumi also loyal to her employer, as long as they respect and appreciate her works. “Inner Strength” Defensive: Megumi will defend everything she believed as truth. When someone tried to sway her opinion, she will present an argument and even try to persuade the other into believing what she believes. On the other hand, she won’t easily believe something to be true if she hadn’t checked it herself. Sharp: She knows when she’s being lied at. And by asking a right question at the right time, she always found the truth she seeks. Once a friend joked that Megumi gathered information using her nose, hence the “demonic dog” nickname. Confident: Confidence is a must to survive the fashion critiques. If the model didn’t look confident with herself, the outfit she wore won’t look good no matter how beautiful the model is. Megumi’s shyness appears when a man flirted and teased her. Mature: She’s an adult and a woman who is very capable in defending herself. She always read the atmosphere, choosing an appropriate time to speak and calculating the situation before taking an action. If she lose in a competition, she would smile and congratulate the winner, saying something about she didn’t train better or her competitor really deserved to win. Professional: Megumi valued the time; it’s ticking really fast and human should never be left behind its hands. She always give the best in everything she does. In making appointment with her, you can be sure she would come exactly at the appointed time. Only the professionals can reach the top of the world, no? Of course, Megumi also possess traits outside the “yamato nadeshiko” ideals: Curious: It made her senses tingle. Megumi would do an extensive research about things that peaked her interest - and by extensive, she won’t be satisfied by simply looking about it in the internet. The woman would visit a local library, interview people, even following her object of interest anywhere it goes. Megumi will only stopped once her curiosity is fulfilled. Picky: She's only being picky in making friends. People who surrounded you may give influence and defined who you really are. Those who didn’t fit in her list mostly lawbreakers and unprofessionals. And sometimes, private-space invader. |

Solitude: To appreciate the beauty of nature, one must separate his/herself from the noise that disrupt one's soul. In solitude you can appreciate what you already have and feel grateful of that. Chado & Ikebana: The second phase is to create a beauty and taste it by your senses. Megumi wasn't really excelled in this field, but she enjoyed the making process nonetheless. It helped her relaxing after a hectic day in photography session. Bromance: Friendship between men always looked so heroic in Megumi's eyes. She enjoyed movies that displayed bromanceship a lot. And no, nothing sexual happens, it's simply a bond over guns or swords! Karate: Megumi is a holder of brown belt, two steps away from the deadly black belt. Her favourite moves are kicks, especially the mawashi-geri aka roundhouse-kick. Lolita fashion: While some like it because of its cuteness, Megumi likes it because it showed strength behind laces and petticoats. Her favourite sub-styles are Aristocrat, Classic and Casual. She sometimes wanted to wear Gothic style in broad daylight, but people in London wasn't really familiar with this trend apparently. Plus, not many people knew the meaning of “lolita” in this style is different from the more negative meaning people usually perceived. Hunting: There is a thrill in the hunt, yes, but not from the fear emitted by the prey. Megumi enjoyed hunting for information, either for her writings’ research or simply for her own amusement. The satisfaction feel she gets when the hunt ended is really priceless. Writing: A way to channel what she couldn’t say openly; who wants to hear a love story of a lonely rubbish bin and the garbage truck? Megumi finds writing about inanimate objects is fun and she could use them to speak her own opinion. She sometimes wrote articles about fashion in London to magazines in Japan. Short stories she posted to both online and printed media always written under her pen name, “Inuyasha”. | Unprofessional people : As someone who works in a fashion industry, Megumi really understand how the competition works in that world; it’s a world where dog eats dog. The weak will be crushed as soon as they loosened their guard. Those who don’t understand what professionalism means should just quit and live the rest of their life in a remote island. Being called moe: Megumi knows she’s cute and like cute fashion but it doesn’t mean she’s a moe. A woman can be cute-looking without being childish, no? Lawbreakers: She couldn’t stand people like this; even those who clearly saw a crime happened before their eyes and do nothing to punish the criminals. Megumi felt people who let the crimes happen is as bad as the criminals themselves. But what’s worst is when the violators of law are actually the ones who work as the upholder of justice. Their system is rotten and rotten things should be buried six feet under, alive if necessary. People who don't understand what a private space/public place means: Things that happened in bedroom should stay in bedroom. Public space means you can’t do things like invading private space as you desired; and being a lonely third wheel is awkward, you know. But if you’re close to her to some degree - like close friend - she may allowing friendly hugs once or twice. Alcohol: Megumi can’t hold her liquor. Enough said. Hidden truth: It hurts. When you finally know what’s been hidden from you, it’s too late to mend anything broken. Lies are not something that can be undone easily. |

Helping the police force/MI6 in one of their big case Writing her own novel Hired by a major fashion label | The truth she believed is a beautifully crafted lie: It’ll be the greatest shame she ever feel. Not to mention the feel of betrayal if the liar was someone she respected deeply. Kidnapped: Being kidnapped means you don’t choose your fate anymore. Anything worse than death can happen once you’re kidnapped. Cockroach: This thing can survive a nuclear explosion and able to stay alive even if its head severed. Megumi was glad it didn’t come in greater size. |
Background |
Megumi Kudo was born to a housewife, Hinata Honda, and a police detective, Akihiko Kudo, in Tokyo. She grew under her father’s care since her mother died in a childbirth. At least, that’s what she heard from her father. Her childhood was quite normal. Megumi took a karate lesson since age 10 and even won some competitions. On the other hand, her father didn’t really want his only daughter grew into a tomboy, so every summer he sent Megumi to his mother-in-law, whom Megumi called Honda-baasan. Her grandmother taught her the ways to become a “yamato nadeshiko”, and her father was glad that Megumi actually enjoyed spending time with her maternal grandmother. Entering puberty, Megumi toned down her karate competition and started to take an interest in fashion, especially Gothic Lolita. She and her friends would put a cute dark dress, large bow and take a stroll in Akibahara streets under a parasol on a sunny day. Besides fashion, Megumi also began to write short (sappy romantic) stories that loosely based on her friends’ experience. They started to call her as “inuyasha” - demonic dog - since she really sharp in detecting gossips and juicy stories. Megumi was quite close to her father, even sometimes would offer her help in a case he currently worked at. Akihiko noted that she possessed a sharp intuition, always taking a different angle towards a case. With her help, Akihiko able to solve many cases and indirectly helped his career. What Megumi felt weird was the fact that Akihiko opposed her idea to work as a law enforcer. He even went as far as registered her in a modelling competition; in which Megumi ended as a runner-up and start her modelling career in age 16. Obeying Honda-baasan’s wish, Megumi refused to pose for gravure magazine, but it didn’t hinder her career at all. Akihiko was a very dedicated hard-worker, always taking the extra mile to ensure his case is perfectly solved. One day, his superior found him lying in his office unmoved - a heart attack had killed him in an instant. At that time, Megumi had finished high school and already a rising star in fashion industry - although she still wanted to be a police or detective. It was when Akihiko had been cremated and his ash buried Megumi knew why he didn’t want her to follow his path. In the deepest corner of Akihiko’s cupboard, Megumi found a photo album. Of her... and her mother. The date ranged from her birth day to a month after. She also found newspaper article clippings, all that told one similar story: a policeman’s wife was shot in the head when she was shopping downtown following the policeman’s finding about the yakuza influence in local court. There were no names stated, but Megumi didn’t need the sharp instinct to connect all the red dots. Her hatred towards crime, criminals and every shape of law-violation sparked in an instant. She also felt betrayed since none of her family member told her about this. She choose to stay silent, never revealing what she found and buried her dream to be a law enforcer. Megumi stayed for one and a half year in Japan, until Honda-baasan died, before accepting an offer from a fashion magazine to be their overseas contributor, stationed in London. In London, aside from her writing job, she also works for several labels, mainly for their campaign ads. To fit the English atmosphere, Megumi only brought her mature Lolita outfits from her homeland. She sometimes can be found wearing a 19th century knee-length dress with mute colors, except when she’s in a hunt for information. |

Megumi was never been here before, nor she had planned to explore the cosmopolitan area of Notting Hill. The only reason that caused her coming was the well-respected photographer in her agency had demanded that their photo session for Pucchi’s spring-summer collection advertising should be done at night in this district. A very uncommon idea since spring-summer items usually displayed under natural sunlight, along with flowers and beaches. Still, said photographer was a senior in the agency and the label’s representative had appalled the idea (“Oh it will be very fabulous, my dearies~!”) so six hours ago their small team stopped at Notting Hill and began taking photos. It was already past midnight when they finally finished. Her co-workers, the fellow models, had asked Megumi if she want to join their trip to a gay bar downtown. She still remembered her last trip to a gay bar; her friends had chatted noisily with their sassy gay friends and forgetting the Japanese. It’s lucky a friendly bartender had saved her from being awkward for the rest of the night. Megumi turned down the offer politely, saying she was tired and need rest. After she bid her friends good bye, she didn’t immediately heading home but instead she walked around neighborhood looking for a convenience store. Drinking a can of orange juice would be nice before sleeping. Her unexpected stroll brought her to Portobello Road Market. Most shops had closed at this hour. Megumi huffed, it was so easy to find a twenty-four-seven convenience store in Japan - they were everywhere, the savior of insomniac students who longed for a half-priced bento. Megumi did find her destination, although they didn’t sell bento in any shape or form. The Japanese bought two cans of juice: orange and apple. She was heading to the large road when her ears picked up a scream. “...help me, please!” Without wasting any second to think, the model turned on her heels. Her guard raised, ready to pick every slightest human movement, smell or voice. Megumi didn’t hear any voice anymore; fear started to grow in her mind. Was it mugging? Kidnapping? Or... worse, a rape? And was the attacker more than one? If it was a group, she won’t have the upper hand. She quickly dug inside her bag and took her phone out; which was immediately followed by a heavy sigh. Her phone’s battery went dead. The only way to call the police was looking for other people but if she do that, she won’t have enough time to prevent whatever crime that was about to happen. Megumi decided to keep moving forward. She could hear movements; she was very close. The Japanese took turn, ran to the alley’s end and take turn again before she finally arrived at the scene. The alley’s darkness hampered her sight, but it didn’t stop her from shouting, “stop!” |
