Nikolai Alekseev Zajac "Alone. Yes, that's the key word, the most awful word in the English tongue. Murder doesn't hold a candle to it and hell is only a poor synonym." ― Stephen King |

Cold: Nikolai isn't known for making his emotions shown for all to see. He comes off as distant and kind of indifferent. He has a stone wall build up around him, emotionally separating himself from others. He wouldn't know how to convey his feelings, even if he wanted to - which is 'No' in big, red letters at the moment. He knows that at some point he'll have to get over his borderline-antisocial behavior if he wants to make it in a city as big as London, but for now he prefers to keep up his barriers. Suspicious: He's very hesitant to trust others. He's been taken advantage of before, and he isn't keen on having that happen again. He always suspects that someone has an ulterior motive, even if it's something as little as apologizing for bumping into him. He's not paranoid, though he could possibly give off the impression of being as such. Judgemental: He has a very bad habit of being overly critical of others, especially upon first meeting them. If they don't leave a good impression, he won't let them forget it, no matter how many times they try to make it up. He has a mental list of flaws he notices, which he has a knack for picking up the longer he's known a person. Very rarely does he look over that sort of stuff, and when he does is a sign that the person may want to run. Responsible: Punctual, organized, keeps up with deadlines, the whole package. He has his priorities in order-- well, for the most part. There are times he may be a bit behind, but he does his best to catch up as soon as possible, even if it means pulling an all-nighter with nothing but a pot of coffee to keep him company. Loyal: Those who've managed the tedious task of gaining his trust has got him on their side, through thick and thin... until they stab him in the back. But until that happens, he'll look out for that person and just be a good friend, or rather acquaintance. It will take a lot more work for him to consider someone as a friend, since he wants to make sure that his time isn't going to be wasted on someone who won't put in the effort. Family-Oriented: He's a family guy, even if him and his family aren't exactly on speaking terms right now. He cares for them more than anything, but they don't see eye to eye with him regarding a few things, and then he ended up in London and-- it's a long story. It pains him to have to be so far away from them, but he does have dreams that don't fit in the equation his parents set for him. Don't get him wrong, does try to make contact, but they never seem to answer his calls... Possessive: This trait of his only shows itself when he becomes overly attached to something, or someone. It's only done him more harm than good, and he just wishes it could disappear. He doesn't want to scare off anyone anymore, he's tired of losing himself to this... need. It's gotten a bit better than it used to have been over the years, but anything can just set it off again. Revengeful: He's the type of person who wants to get even on his terms and no one else's. If one were to wrong him, they might as well write their will while they have the chance. Not only did they betray whatever trust he may have had towards them, but they also got a one-way ticket to his bad side. He will stop at nothing to balance things out, even if it's not fair to the other party. Kind: Underneath all the layers of ice, there's a heart of gold. He has his moments where he'll go out of his way to be of use and help those in need, whether it being a random act or not. He's a good soul deep down, but whether that fact surfaces or not really depends on his mood. He isn't entirely keen on helping out if he's in a sour mood, then again he doesn't know anyone who is. Lonely: Although he won't admit it, he does feel like he's trying to isolate himself too much. He wants to be able to know people better, he wants to show that he does care about their presence, he wants to tell them he appreciates all they do, but he can't bring himself to do it. It's just not in his nature to do such, and that makes the fact a bit more hard to bear at times. He's made it this far on his own, and he's willing to go all the way to the end alone as well if need be, though who doesn't want a bit of company along the way? |

Science: It is and always has been his passion, even from a young age. It's always been his favorite subject in school, and he was, and still is, pretty damn good at it too. He just finds it to be so interesting, and it's one of the few things he'll actually get remotely excited over. Reading: One of his hobbies. He read whatever he could get his hands on when he was younger, and now he reads whenever he can squeeze in the time to between whatever he's busy with. It's one of his more favorite things to do in his spare time. The Occult: He finds it to be... interesting, to say the least. He doesn't practice it, that would be another reason his parents would want to keep from talking to him, but he does read about it. He stumbled across an article relating to it a few years back and he hasn't stopped reading about it since. Weapons: Mostly those of the sharp and pointy variety, like knives for example. He's had more than enough experience with them in various situations, and he also keeps a few on his person. As a precaution, of course. It's not like he's going to jump someone in an alleyway and stab them. Kids: He has a soft-spot for them, part of it being that he wants to have kids of his own in the future. He probably wouldn't be much of a good parent, since he would probably want to study their behavior or something the whole time. Either that or he would blow stuff up in the microwave to amuse them and risk having to buy a new one every few weeks. | Being Bothered: He can tolerate it when it doesn't happen while he's in the middle of doing something or in a bad mood, otherwise he'll just grow more and more irritated. The last thing he needs to be when working is annoyed, so he would really appreciate some personal space. Drawn-out Conversations: Sometimes conversations are meant to die and be put to rest. He doesn't need to stay and listen any more than he needs to, especially if it's when someone is trying to keep the conversation alive and running. If anything, he'll just walk away when it happens. Being in London: It's too far away from his family, and he wishes more than anything to be with them. The city in itself would be fantastic and enjoyable if he had his loved ones close by. Sadly, he hasn't talked to them in a while and he has no idea where they are. For all he knows, they could be taking a bus downtown at any moment. Hot Weather: He loves cold weather, especially when it snows. When the heat goes up, he isn't a very happy camper. With his light skin, he burns pretty badly. Not to mention he has a strong love for coats, and it's a death wish to wear coats during hot weather. Repeating Himself: He understands that sometimes he might mumble and it's needed, but no more than three times. If that ends up being the case, he may as well save his breath because clearly the other has some sort of hearing problems that he needs to yell for them to be able to understand what he's saying and-- He just opts to writing it down in most cases. |
Dreams | Fears |
Complete His Internship: He's worked so hard to be able to have this opportunity, and he doesn't want to ruin it. It's an honor alone to have be accepted, well to him at least. It's all he could ever hope for, and he doesn't want to do something to have it be taken from him. Fix Family Ties: He knows things are pretty shaky between him and his parents, and he wants to be able to patch things up before the rift becomes too deep to be repairable. He just hopes that when the time comes, he'll actually know how to go about it without making the situation worse. Find Love: Everyone yearns for it, no? Don't get him wrong, he isn't some lovesick puppy who craves a person's affection so much that he'll go out of his way to look for anyone who might remotely be good for him. No, he's past that stage of life and is perfectly content with staying single until he finds "the one". Even so, a part of him does hope that he's capable of being in a healthy, lasting relationship with someone who really cares for him. | Porcelain Dolls: They just creep him out to no end, the way they just sort of stare with their soulless eyes. He's practically unable to properly function when he's aware one is around, especially if it's in plain sight. His fear stems from a bad experience when he was a child where his friends thought it would be funny pulling a prank regarding the damn things, and, well, he was huddling in a corner when they finally opened up the room. Dogs: He never was a dog person, and probably never will be, even if he does end up getting over this fear. He can tolerate being around the smaller breeds to some extent, but when a large one shows up, he'll be running in any other direction, even if it will probably end up in the dog chasing him or something of the sort. Losing His Faith: He grew up in a religious household, and his belief is one of the only things he has to remind him of his family back home. Part of the argument he had with his parents was about this, and he doesn't want to go and prove what they said was right. |
Background |
Nikolai was born in Minsk, Belarus and spent the majority of his life there. He lived in an average family, having two older siblings to look up to in the childish admiration most kids have. Everything used to be different back then, he was different. He was more open, more eager to meet new people and have fun, but he was also more naive. He foolishly handed out his trust without a second-thought. Only after having that trust crumpled up and thrown back at his face did he begin to turn into the person he is now. He must have been around ten at the time the incident occurred, It was suppose to be a simple prank, all fun and games, but in the end he wasn't the one laughing. His friends had thought up a great idea for a prank to pull on him one year. A room full of dolls, where they locked him in there then bang on the walls, having them all fall over from the shelves and break on the floor. They expected some sort of screaming, but all they got was silence. When they let him out, he was a bit more hesitant to do anything with them again, to say the least. That was only the starting point, but things really went downhill when he first found out about his possessive nature. What happened? He loved his big sister, more than anything. He cared for her, he wanted her to be alright and safe from any and all harm. His love was nothing romantic, but it was strong nonetheless. It started out as any other strong sibling relationship, but then he started to get obsessive. He would constantly worry about where she was and who she was with, he would find away to get rid of anyone romantically interested in her, he would even go as far as to follow her around. He isn't sure how long it went on for, but he remembers that one day he came to a sudden realization. He noticed that what he was doing was scaring her, and that alone scared him too. He didn't mean to do that, all his intentions were good-nature'd, but it still happened. After that, he became more withdrawn, more hesitant about getting close to anyone, not wanting to go through that experience all over again. He became even more focused in his studies to keep his mind off it, and that's just how things went from then on. He was, and still is, a pretty good student. He always seemed to have known what he wanted to be and where he dreamed of working, the latter requiring him to learn English. Instead of enrolling in English classes, he had a close friend's father teach him. In fact, that man, Mr. Miles was his name, was the reason why he wanted to work in England of all places. He was a very kind person, even if his Cyrillic skills weren't the best, as well as his spoken Russian. Nikolai somehow managed to get a decent grasp on the language before the end of college, though there were times he was "lost in translation". (Those moments still happen every now and then, but he tries his best to hide it.) After painful hours of filling out applications, then getting accepted against all odds, he had to break the news to his parents. They were anything but excited, mostly because he was going to be so far from home. Then things led to things, which is a whole different story within itself, and he went to London despite what his parents wished, not wanting to give up on his dreams. He's been in London for almost a year now, and he just hopes that everything turns out good in the end. |

Nikolai wasn't one to walk around the city, especially in broad daylight. Now was one of the few exceptions, the reason as to why is best saved for later. Even thinking about why he has to drag himself about the city was nearly enough to put him in a bad mood. Just barely. The longer he spent out, the more irritated he was getting with everything. Why did it have to be daytime? Well, at least it wasn't raining. He would have mixed feelings about snow, but rain was just troublesome to deal with. Sighing softly, he was just grateful he was sent to the smaller parts of the city and not the center. He would be a goner if he had to go anywhere near there. He didn't know what drew him into the park, especially since he had no business with it in the first place. For all he knew, he could be walking aimlessly trying to pass the time so he didn't have to run whatever errand he was on. Well, of course he would end up having to carry it out, but it can't hurt to hold it off for a bit. It wasn't like he was going to spend hours neglecting his duty, only a minute or so. Even if he was annoyed, at least he could try to relax a bit. He almost rolled his eyes at the thought. There was no way he would ever have time to "relax", it was one of the many cons of being what he was. It was a bit tiring at times, yes, but by now he got used to the feeling. He stopped in his tracks, seeing a woman sitting underneath the tree. He was a bit curious as to why she was alone, since London wasn't all sunshine and rainbows where everyone was king and never would hurt a fly. He cautiously made his way over, since he had not much else he could do that would be better. (Well, there was always that errand, but he preferred to just leave it out of his mind for the time being. He was getting in a slightly better mood and the last thing he wanted was for it to be brought right back down again.) He looked down at the book she was holding, trying to get a good look of the cover. "...I always heard that book was good read; Always been on my list, but never got around to reading it..." he commented softly, mostly directed to himself since he noticed that the other was listening to music halfway through. Well, she sure seemed like she wasn't open for a "friendly" conversation, and Nikolai was more that willing to leave right at that moment. |
