Outwardly speaking, at first glance, Ciel is a quiet, serious and maturing young woman who hails from the royal family who originated from the tiny Principality of Monaco. Not very many people know of her nation of birth, nor of its rich culture, vast history, or its place in world politics. This is partly why she strives to learn all she can, and attempts to teach others every so often when she is able to. Having access to any amount of books she wanted also helped with her interest in expanding knowledge. Enlightening people with education of facts is something she takes pleasure in, along with games of luck. One might find it ironic that Ciel enjoys such games, seeing as she also enjoys learning quite an extensive amount of information and prefers to have a guide; as well as being able to be confident in her relatively wide expanse of knowledge. Yet when it comes to poker and other games of chance, Ciel participates avidly. She finds it to be good fun and a nice way to unwind, as well as being able to have a chance to just take a gamble in life. She's not as eager to dive into the unknown in other aspects. She always has a deck of cards and her dice on her person; she never goes anywhere without them. There could always be the chance of encountering an opponent who's willing to challenger her in a game of poker. She may come off as somewhat high-strung and unsociable at times during gatherings which can be off-putting, as she tends to keep a poker face of a neutral expression, but Ciel is generally polite to acquaintances and other people she doesn’t know very well. But don’t be discouraged; she’s like that to essentially everyone. She becomes much friendlier and smiles more once you spend some time with her and/or you share common interests. However, many people are quick to judge and assume she is very prideful. She typically maintains the same neutrality when interacting with those she are not familiar with. Inwardly speaking, Ciel is a wary, intelligent and willful young woman who is her own person. She’s passionate about books and other things she likes – especially games of chance, and is particularly fond of any friends she might make. She grew up, for the most part, without making friends easily, so anybody she grows close to now, she is most likely attached to for life. It's a rare occasion do to trust issues with people she once thought she could trust, and she remains cautious of people's intentions. Ciel likes helping friends if they ever have a problem of any kind, and is there as a both empathetic and logical companion if needed. She has a sharp tongue and often makes witty remarks to those who offer the opportunity. She is also a good debater, and makes sure to use detailed evidence selected specifically from her arsenal of knowledge to reinforce her argument. Ciel’s constant use of a poker face as a child (practice makes perfect) allows her to easily conceal her emotions from others, so it’s rare for anyone to see any negative emotions, especially anger, frustration and sadness on her facial expressions. Some people have accused her of being cold and uncaring, but that is not true in the least -- she is prone to experiencing all sorts of feelings, just like anyone else. She is simply good at pretending she doesn't. Ciel is extremely knowledgeable. She knows much of what’s going on throughout the city, ranging from rumors from what she overhears by anyone else she may talk to, or just simple facts about her peers. Ciel has memorized many of the others' abilities and characteristics when hearing about them, or witnessing them first hand. She has a very good memory, and there is little she doesn’t know. Collecting data is something she naturally does, just as if she was breathing. Liking to know all she can about people -- facts, personalities, habits, relationships -- she has the tendency to automatically collect all the information possible about a person. Part of this is most likely due to her paranoia of people's intentions at times. But because she knows so much, Ciel has a more difficult time with originality. She personally prefers to follow an example of some sort than be left to her own devices. She needs a source of inspiration of some kind to be able to accomplish anything. When she has a little time to relax, she won’t be complaining if she hears any gossip. She has many quirks. A habit of hers in particular is adjusting her glasses. When speaking to someone, she has a tendency to push them back up on her face where they belong. Sometimes, they've hardly slid down too far, and it's just an automatic habit. She secretly thinks it makes her look just a little cool. She has a very good memory -- not quite photographic, but something incredibly close. She's not always able to remember everything she'd like, but overall she can recall things with ease. She stores data internally as she collects it, and has an endless library of files and books regarding people and any other information she's learned in her mind. At some points, however, she can mix up her sources of data and can make mistakes. It would happen to anyone who possesses such an ability, and often she will write certain things down as reminders -- enough to help her remember, but nearly nothing to help someone who had broken in to scour for details. To be blunt, Ciel is terrible at physical activities. She has low stamina, and has difficulties performing strenuous physical activities such as running for an extended period of time. Naturally, she's unable to fight or physically defend herself. It's difficult for her to sustain herself while doing strenuous physical activities, and she has been known to faint when she is unable to handle anymore -- which is quite often. She has a knack for learning languages -- being able to remember things as easily as she does, she knows quite a few. She is fluent in English, French, and Monegasque, knows a decent amount of Italian, and can speak enough Spanish to be competent if necessary. She enjoys reading books to relax, and when angered, very rarely resorts to physical violence. She much rather prefers to use words over weapons, and is a logical woman. Her reasoning is usually sound, although not everyone is perfect -- mistakes are made sometimes. Assumptions can be made, as not all observations are always correct. She watches, but perhaps not always as keenly as she would like. |

✔ poker; card games in general ;; always a betting girl, Ciel loves to gamble. Naturally, her favorite game is poker -- she enjoys all versions of it, and is quite skilled. She's a force to be reckoned with, and should not be underestimated under any circumstances when betting. She likes other card games and knows of most in existence, but nothing really can compare to the thrill of poker. ✔ organization ;; a necessity in life. Ciel has a constant need to always know where everything is, and be able to find it immediately if required to. It's a personal preference, to be sure, but she abhors being in any state of disarray. ✔ reading ;; one of her favorite past times, besides poker. Being a woman who cherishes knowledge and having the chance to learn, expanding her storage of memory, Ciel has loved books ever since she was a young child. Her mother used to read her stories, and it was no surprise when she developed such adoration for them. ✔ gossip ;; it goes along with the knowledge collecting, to be entirely honest. Ciel doesn't mind hearing some interesting details about people every now and then; it's rather intriguing, and it's not like she tells anyone else -- well, not usually. She's likes listening to what people think of each other, strangely enough -- it helps her learn more about what type of person the speaker is, and it contributes to observing people's relationships with each other. ✔ competition ;; there's nothing wrong with a little friendly competition! Ciel may seem to be passive, but she truly enjoys a good game -- and being known for her winning streak and difficulty to beat at games of luck, she's accustomed to victory. Losing such games is hardly ever heard of; she's naturally a competitive person and likes it when people challenge her. ✔ schedules ;; this goes along with her tendency of organization. She prefers to have everything mapped out, so she knows what to expect. Typically, Ciel is a person who tends to go by the books and follows the schedules she makes closely. She prefers not to be impulsive, and thinks rationally about her options. ✔ violin and piano ;; she's always enjoyed any music on the violin and piano in particular as a child. Her parents played lovely songs they had learned together. a perfect duet. They're nostalgic in a bittersweet way for her, but she still loves the sounds, regardless. The resonance is absolutely perfect, and she thinks the harmony is hardly music that should exist on down on Earth. ✔ architecture ;; Ciel finds it amazing how beautiful some buildings are. They can be simple, complex, innovative, or a mix of all three. A combination of stability and creativity seems incredible, as when Ciel thinks of creativity, she usually thinks of something more artistic. Architecture is art in its own right, and she likes it greatly. | ✖ presumptions ;; if there's anything Ciel hates, it's presumptions. Everyone naturally judges a person they first meet -- based on physical appearances, introductions, and the overall glimpse of personality they see. Of course, not everything is as it seems; mistakes and automatic assumptions are made. This is part of the motivation that drives her to learn as much as possible about people before genuinely judging. She prefers to throw away any first impressions she may see, as she believes it's not a true nor fair reflection of a person and who they really are. ✖ ignorance ;; Ciel dislikes not knowing things. She firmly thinks that knowledge is power -- therefore, she strives to learn all she can. It's bad enough when other people around her are ignorant and bigoted, but she could never allow herself to be ignorant on any subject. ✖ unwanted favors ;; the thought is appreciated, but Ciel would much rather prefer you just don't do anything unnecessary for her. She's not helpless, and is perfectly capable of doing things for herself. Anything she didn't ask for personally are not taken favorably. A favor for a favor is perfectly fine, but anything else is disregarded. ✖ tardiness ;; this goes along with her preferences of organization and schedules. She likes to keep everything going according to plan. If you make arrangements, she would prefer you simply show up on time in the first place -- rather than sincerely apologizing and getting something as compensation for being late. ✖ losing ;; because she is so used to winning and her competitive nature -- in debates, knowledge, poker games and most other competitions, Ciel hates losing. This, however, does not make her a sore loser. She's merely disappointed in herself for being defeated when she knew she could have won. It's likely she'll request for a re-match. ✖ secrets ;; since she dislikes not knowing things, she also dislikes when people keep secrets. She's not trying to be nosy, but secrets are certainly an crucial aspect of a person and how they act -- it's nice to know everything she can find out. She respects when people, obviously, prefer to keep their secrets -- seeing as everyone has some, including herself -- but that doesn't mean she doesn't like them. ✖ cheating ;; if you're going to play a game, you might as well play it fairly. There's a reason it's called a game. If you dare cheat when playing with Ciel, she will not take it kindly -- it's an insult, unwarranted, and not tolerable. Don't take your chances on this one. ✖ betrayal ;; if you show even the slightest hint of disloyalty, you're off the case, no matter who you are. Ciel doesn't trust easily, and she highly prizes those who remain loyal. Betrayal is not welcome, and if you dare to cross her by stabbing her in the back, she is not afraid to return the favor. |
Dreams | Fears |
► revenge ;; Ciel desires to have revenge on the people who wronged her and her immediate family. She is aware that the ones involved are distant family who wanted to sabotage her, and increase their own chances of becoming the next Grimaldi heir to the throne in Monaco. They are not the only people who wronged her, however, and she dreams of one day being able to see her enemies crushed beneath her heels. ► returning home ;; for now, she has left Monaco and has no plans of returning any time soon. She fled for her own safety, and will not be able to go back until she has eliminated the danger and ensured that she will have a safe return. ► achieving happiness ;; happiness can either be a very loose or a very specific definition, depending on the person. For Ciel specifically, she desires a comfortable life where she is where she belongs -- on the throne of the Principality of Monaco. A romantic partner would perhaps also be favorable; though she is currently not actively seeking someone to fill the position. A family is not what she is looking for, particularly due to what she has witnessed when royalty families are excessively extended. | ► surrendering control ;; specifically, losing control of a situation. Ciel isn't a control freak, but she likes to be able to have a handle on what's happening -- able to have a strategy or an idea to remedy a bad occurrence if it happens. It's a great fear of hers to unable to be do anything useful if a bad situation came about; seeing as knowledge is her most powerful weapon and one of her few, Ciel cherishes it. Her ability doesn't really help in most situations, regarding this -- as it leaves it up to luck and probability, but she's always been one to take risks. ► incompetency ;; it's not acceptable under any circumstances for Ciel. She prides herself on her knowledge, and she cannot allow herself to perform anything less than what she's capable of. But there's an infinite amount of information in the world, and she's only touched upon the surface. She fears being unable to demonstrate knowledge of a subject and looking like a fool. ► losing her loved ones ;; Ciel relishes the personal connections she has with people. Close ones are important to her; she is most afraid of never being able to see or contact them again, due to losing them in any way possible -- such as moving, isolation, or death. She has already suffered this when she lost her parents. |
Background |
She was born as Ciel Reine Grimaldi, to the Royal Grimaldi family of the esteemed Principality of Monaco; born into the life of a princess, being the granddaughter of the current Prince. Her mother was the first born child of the Prince, and was next in line. She was to inherit the throne in her lifetime, following her parents, and they flourished well. Ciel's childhood was pleasant enough; she was well-educated and tutored and learned all that was required to be a good leader. She enjoyed learning, unlike many of her relatives or other children her age. Her parents were encouraging, warm, safe and secure. She was content when she was young, but as all children are, she was just a bit too ignorant. Her aunts, uncles, and cousins were all envious. They were not patient; they wanted the throne for themselves. Ciel wasn't aware of their animosity towards her parents and herself until she grew older, and she regrets that she hadn't seen the signs sooner. She had realized that they were a bit more cold than families were usually to each other, but she had brushed it off -- it was nothing too serious, there were always family feuds. She had never imagined they might attempt to actually remove them from the equation. Ciel had always been lucky; her fellow peers used to dub her "Lady Luck" due to her eloquent mannerisms and her constant winning streaks when they would participate in games. However, she hadn't ever considered her luck would actually perhaps be a factor in her survival when her parents were mercilessly murdered by her distant relatives. The poison had been delivered in glasses of wine. A favorite to go along with dinner, Ciel's parents thoroughly enjoyed having one most nights. The perpetrators were more than aware of this fact, and it had been easy enough for them to bribe a few people to slip the toxic chemical into the drink. None of them had been suspecting, and Ciel had declined her glass for that night. She had been feeling ill for the past few days, and she was aware the wine would serve to further upset her ailing stomach. Dinner was served, and the drinks heartily consumed along with the rich meal. It wasn't until the next morning that the Princess and her husband had apparently passed away in their sleep. And at the age of sixteen, Princess Ciel Grimaldi was an orphan. Upon further inspection to ensure there was no foul play, it was found that the royal couple had been poisoned. The source of it had been the wine glasses, and Ciel knew that if she had accepted the drink, she would be dead now, too. The authorities investigated and pooled all their resources together to find the culprit, but it resulted in the servants involved being detained. Upon admittance of one that he was guilty, the case was announced closed and that was it. But Ciel didn't buy a single word, and despite her perpetual insistence that something was wrong, her concerns were easily brushed off. So, she took it upon herself to look into it further. She was in danger herself now; she was the immediate next in line to inherit the throne of the Principality of Monaco, and it was likely whoever had truly committed the crime would not rest until she was also dead. She did her own digging around, and it was clear her own blood was to blame. Along with this information, she discovered somebody else was involved, who had been hired -- somebody who had fled to the United Kingdom of Great Britain after the business had been said and done. So, of course, her answer was to follow after them. She had plenty of money, the resources, and the incentive for vengeance for the job. Ciel promised herself she would take care of her so-called "family" when she found this person, and she would obtain revenge for her parents; it would be exacted. She traveled to London without saying a word to anyone, leaving only a letter behind addressed to her grandfather that she would be home soon -- "soon" having no particular definition of time. It was easy enough to put together a disguise and throw off any potential suspicion. She was prepared for this, and as long as it was obvious she was out there somewhere in the world, Ciel knew her relatives could not inherit the throne as long as she was alive. In London, now nineteen, Ciel changed her name to Ciel Estelle Blanc. It had a nice ring to it, and while she altered her middle and last name for obvious reasons, she had deigned to keep her given name. It was the first gift she had ever received from her parents, and she did not intend to give it up. She arranged to organize a casino, that also functioned as a hotel; named the Fortuna Magnus Casino. It was a clever set-up, truly; a perfect place to continue making money, as well as having plenty of people to flock to her with potential information. Welcoming and enticing for its games and social gatherings, it quickly became more and more popular as people heard word of it. After all, who would refuse a chance to test their luck? The human nature and urge to take the risk -- as long as there was some sort of chance -- was overwhelming at times, and it was often that people built up the mindset of "next time". Next time they'd win. They just had to keep playing, and eventually it would happen. Sure enough, her reasoning had proven true. With the grand opening of the casino, floods upon floods of people came. It was found to be quite popular in only a short amount of time, and it aligned with Ciel's purposes wonderfully. There was now a pool of potential resources with information, and she was aware people of all kinds -- agents, lawless, brokers, anyone and everyone -- could use the casino as a meeting place to exchange information, or to fit their own agendas. It was perfect. However, there was a slight interference to her plans that she had not originally anticipated. Since the murder of her parents had been officially blamed on a mere servant, the general public was not aware of the true culprits. Therefore, they remained ignorant to the fact that Ciel had reason to leave the country; and they had begun to search for her. It was not favorable, certainly, but Ciel had changed her hair and her looks enough to keep under the radar for the moment. It was helpful that girls who dreamed of being royalty attempted to come forward and claim the throne, but she was not particularly concerned of a fraud taking her place. Their efforts are appreciative, but unwanted -- as a result, she is not afraid to throw anybody attempting to return her home off her trail in any way possible. For now, she bides her time. A few years have gone by, and she has yet to find any more clues regarding to who assisted her so-called "family" in killing her parents. She is not afraid to utilize lawless means to accomplish her goal -- nor is she afraid to use the MI6 and Scotland Yard. Anybody and everybody is at her disposal, and she will use any resources that are available to her. Ciel can be patient; she waits for the day when she'll be able to finally find the culprit, and she can return home to finish the job -- and when that day comes, they shall be executed. |

(from manor of fate) Every step through the poorly lit corridors was gingerly taken, a possible trigger to a fatal trap that would lead to her demise. She had not encountered anyone (or anything) since she had so foolishly chosen to leave her fellow Nations and the party on a trek to satiate her curiosity regarding the history of the Baudeau Manor; her inquiries of the place had fallen upon America's deaf ears previously to their arrival, and so had her searches consulting both books and technology. Nothing except poorly written folklore and wild tales of terrifying encounters some had experienced with the horrendous creatures inhabiting the Manor could be salvaged from the millions of results of her fruitless searching. Ciel's intention was to find a reliable resource, one in the Manor itself, and with observance of the place, it was easily discerned that there must be a library around somewhere. Besides that, there would surely be offices of some sort containing documented information about the fabled Manor and its legendary history; perhaps about when it was built, who had lived here in the past several decades, and what had happened to it to cause it to descend to such a reputation that it would be a good idea to use as a haunted house for a party. She had stumbled around with a single flashlight for what felt like hours, searching through every door with hope she could encounter the library, but it seemed to intend on remaining evasive. All the doors had led to what appeared to be guest rooms, with dusty and worn beds, peeling wallpaper which had once been beautifully kept, and ratty carpets and rotting wood. She also found a barren kitchen, with some questionable supplies stored in the cabinets and refrigerator, and a anything but welcoming living room. There had even been a large and what had once been a brilliant ballroom, the floor made of smooth marble and Ciel had quickly left after a perusal of the leering room, feeling far too small and isolated in the room for her liking. There were skitters of little creatures running along the walls, and Ciel deduced they were only rats or mice. But sometimes she heard sounds that had to belong to a large animal – or rather, creature – and she slowly grew more and more wary. The thoughts of all her searches online began to surface, and she did her best to push him away to the oblivion of memories she wished not to remember, but it was a difficult task and she soon gave up and decided to focus on finding her destination. She found it on the second floor, following a few more colorless bedrooms and a music room containing most noticeably a grand piano – she would have thought it would be dusty, but it strangely seemed like it had been recently played – perhaps by one of the other Nations, she presumed, and didn't search too meticulously out of fear she would run out of time, since the party must be ending rather soon, and continued on. The library was not as large as the ballroom, but could possibly begin to rival its size if its collection was ever to be expanded; there must have been thousands upon thousands of books occupying the very tall shelves, and she noticed a ladder leaning comfortably upon one of them. It looked to be rickety and past its time, and Ciel doubted she would be using it anytime soon. With careful, searching eyes, Ciel began to inspect the small bookshelves, and would run her finger across each book's spine as she read the title with piqued interest. Many of the books in this particular section were from the time of when America was still a colony, under the rule of the British, and when people began immigrating to the New World. As she continued on, the books seemed to progress as history went on, going from the Salem Witch Trials, moving to the beginning stirrings of the American Revolution, the time during and following the Revolution and how America was beginning as an independent country on his own, and then proceeding on to the American Civil War. She wasn't an expert on knowing every single specific of America's past, but she recognized a good majority of the events. She was nearly in the back by this time, and although she still felt uncomfortable in the dank, mustiness of the overbearing room, Ciel was more relaxed being surrounded by the books than anywhere else she had been in the Manor so far. Yet she had not found quite what she was looking for in the first place, and she had already gone through a good portion of the library's contents – The sound of rusty hinges screeching in the agony of being used echoed throughout the grand spaciousness of the room, and Ciel couldn't help but cringe at the unpleasant noise. It reminded her exactly where she was, when just for a few moments, she had managed to be just a little bit ignorant. The door creaked to a undignified close, and there was a pause. Ciel wondered for a moment if it was a Nation who had entered, or if maybe – mind you, this was just a paranoid thought – but a something else. She pointed her flashlight down, hiding it for now until she could figure out what it was, and her other hand reaching for her hidden revolver, when she heard a familiar voice tentatively call out. "Allo...? Is.." Francis's became inaudible, uncertainly becoming silent, and the familiar sound of the groaning floorboards could be heard as he unknowingly approached Ciel's location, before speaking up once more. "..is anyone in 'ere?" Relief swept over her with the knowledge that Francis, the one who takes care of her country's defense and protection, was here. She was no longer alone, there was company to be with. It was only now that she was realizing exactly how lonely she was genuinely feeling in the Manor without having a single companion to converse with, and she her troubled moment of epiphany was placated with his presence. Not wanting to startle the other Nation or to cause a misunderstanding by being too abrupt or insensitive in replying, Ciel just as tentatively returned his call with a quiet, steady voice. She spoke in his native language to be more of a comfort, as she stepped out from her place in between the shelves to greet him with the smallest of smiles. “Bonjour, Francis. C'est moi, Ciel.” |
