Kiku Honda was not having a good day.
He wasn't angry, per se, as he rarely got angry, but he wasn't exactly happy about the day's developments. He'd actually been having a good day until a few short hours ago. Kiku hadn't had that much work on his desk that morning, just some files to go through to double check the international policy and a meeting with his boss. In fact, he'd been planning on heading home early that day. At least, until the meeting. The meeting, Kiku supposed, was where it'd all started to go a little wrong.
He'd met up at his boss's office for the meeting, dressed in his black work suit. He'd been motioned in quickly by the man, who had been pacing around his office with a phone in his hand.
"Ah yes, Kiku." The man stopped for a moment, acknowledging his presence. "I'm glad you're here."
"Yes, sir," Kiku said. "You asked to see me?"
"Yes, yes. You see, I've noticed that you've become very adept with all of your work recently. You don't have much work today, do you?"
"No, sir."
"Good, good. Listen, Kiku, you have spent a great deal time doing desk work. I am, unfortunately, a little shorthanded at the moment. I need someone to go out into the field to do some basic work. You know, spend some time with the common wealth and all. See how things are going around there, making sure we're all alright. Just simplistic stuff, making sure things are in order in London." His boss looked at Kiku. "You can do that, right, Mr. Honda?"
Kiku was tempted to say no. He wasn't a very outdoorsy person. But you really can't deny your boss. "Of course, sir. Is there anywhere in particular you'd like me to go to?"
"Yes, actually. The London Eye and tourist attractions are always good places to start. See how we appear to the general public and foreigners, will you? Bill me the price of your ride there and the ticket. I'll have it refunded to you." With a nod, Kiku's boss dismissed him easily.
And that's how he had ended up here. It was a hot day in London and Kiku had taken off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves, and loosened his tie. If he remembered correctly, the London Eye should be air-conditioned...
The ticket line was long and Kiku slung his jacket over his shoulder as he took out his phone. He figured, judging by the line, that he'd be here for another ten minutes and then a half hour on the London Eye...yes, in total he should be back by four. Not much earlier than usual, but still. He swiped his finger over his phone randomly, bored. Kiku wiped his brow. He waited. It was hot. Why had his boss chosen a day like this for him to be out?
It was undeniable there were many tourists around the London Eye and it would be one of the best places to sort of scout out how London appeared to its tourists. Right now, at the moment, Kiku felt that London could use a citywide air conditioner.
Finally, he reached the front of the line. Kiku gave a small smile at the girl on the other side of the ticket counter. "One single pass ticket to the London Eye please," he said pleasantly.
