Vesna Kitanovska "Can You Chase This Fire Away?" If Vesna could describe her life she'd say 'I'm a support character!'. It is not her desire to be the star, but help all the other ones shine the brightest they can. |

Cheerful- Vesna is an optimist is every way and probably the friendliest person you’ll ever meet. She just has a sunny personality, and likes to cheer people up. It’s very difficult to hate or even be mad at Vesna, because she is such a good person. She always has a nice thing to say to everyone and hardly has any mean bones in her body. Vesna is that friend you can count on to cheer you up and encourage and motivate you. She's the kind of person that strikes up a conversation with strangers, can cry with them and laugh with them, all within a half hour. It's nearly impossible not to smile with Vesna around. When given the chance she can be pretty lively, especially around close friends. She loves to smile and laugh, because life is too short to be negative and feel sorry for yourself. Strong- Strong of mind and strong of body. Even though she needs help making big decisions she never lets people take advantage of her or make her do something she doesn’t want to. She is sturdy emotionally, and doesn’t let things bother her or get to her. Not because she built walls around her but because simply she refuses to let things bring her down. Vesna takes on people’s problems and shoulders their burdens without complaint. Her body is also strong. Vesna is a great long distance runner and stays in peak physical condition for work. Over the years she's grown a great pain tolerance. She can break an arm and still keep smiling, because she doesn’t want people to worry. As her grandfather says, Vesna is built of sterner stuff. Sincere- Everything she does, she does whole heartedly. Never does she act like someone she’s not or lies. What you see if what you get with her. Vesna is a person ruled by her heart, and feels very intensely about things. Her kindness is free of ulterior motives, and never does she seek to use anyone or anything for personal gain. Even if she can't understand someone's pain she tries to sympathize with them and when she asks questions like 'How was your day?' or 'Are you okay?' she truly is interested and wants to know. If you make a friend out of Vesna you are getting a friend for life, and a friend you can always count on. Hard working- Although she may have had a terrible work ethic as a child and does tend to day dream, Vesna is a hard worker. She puts a 100% and more into her shows and twice that into practices. Long hours are nothing new to her, and most of the time she only stops because she knows not to push her horses too hard. She wants nothing but to improve to be a better asset to people. When people are depending on her she rises to the challenge and shines. There’s a drive in her to get things right and to perfect them and to continue learning all she can. You never stop learning, her grandfather said. Brave- Vesna is nearly fearless, and bravely does what others wouldn’t. It could be her naivety or stupidity, but you have to admit, the girl has nerves of steel. The stunts she pulls on horseback are sometimes death defying, and she faces every challenge with a smile. As a girl she ran wild, doing everything the boys did and beyond, proving her worth among them. All their pranks she just brushed off with a smile. It really takes a lot to rattle Vesna. She’s a thrill seeker to sum it up. Death is not something to be feared to her, but something she accepts as her fate, regardless of how early it comes. Naive and Oblivious- If there’s one word to describe her it would be oblivious. There is many times she has no idea what’s truly going on. Often than not Vesna reads the atmosphere wrong in the room. It's hit or miss on reading people, sometimes when she's oblivious it can help her see through facades, other times she's clueless/ Even though she’s a young woman, Vesna is still very naïve about the world around her. She lacks the healthy sense of fear people have. She goes down dark alleys alone at night, oblivious to the dangers that could be lurking. Perhaps it is because she prefers to see the good of the world, but she completes ignore that there is a bad side and bad people out there. Stubborn- Her grandfather often compared her to the old bull on their farm. Tough as nails but doesn’t know when to back down. When she makes a decision it becomes final, and she will not let anyone sway her. You’ll never be able to make her do something she doesn’t want to do, and she will drag her feet and put up a fuss if need be. Sometimes she has a hard time backing down from an argument or a fight. Most of all she doesn't know how to quit things. Vesna will keep at something until she feels she’s perfected it, even at the cost of damaging her body. Her body has many scars to prove her tenacity, and is sure to gain many more in her life. Poor With Money- The things she buys. Her house is filled with useless things because she finds them pretty or amusing. She may or may not have a problem, leaning more towards the first one. Sales are the bane of her existence. Vesna doesn’t consider herself poor, but in reality, she is. She makes good money in her shows and always pays her rent, but is so bad at deciding what she really needs and doesn’t. She’s never freely had money before, been so independent, and she’s doing a terrible job of it. Of course she doesn’t let anyone know her failings, and doesn’t seek help. Vesna eats a lot of soup. Hot Tempered- Though not quick to get angry, push her enough and she explodes. She has no tolerance to being bullied or being pushed around, and will stand her ground. It comes as more of a surprise since she’s so quiet, but cross her once and you won’t want to again. Everything she kept in explodes out and she can reduce even the toughest to tears. Rarely does she feel bad about it either, if you caused her to snap you earned every word she says. Vesna tends to get a little violent when angered, something she hates, and it makes her feel horrible about it later. After losing her temper she feels very drained after it and tries her best to fight against this nature of hers. Quiet- Always lost in her head, Vesna is a quiet girl. She laughs and she smiles but she isn’t one to be overly loud. She’s too quiet though, giving off the impression that she isn’t listening or cares. Which is sometimes the case, but not because she doesn’t care; it’s usually she’s caught up in her head. Most of the time people find her weird and unnerving, just smiling away. In conversations she does speak, and she never lets people put words in her mouth. She’s a better listener than speaker. She prefers to let others talk or talk about them than talk about herself as well. |

Wide open spaces- Vesna grew up in the country, where she had room to roam. She doesn’t like to be confined too much and prefers to spend time surrounded by nature, it’s where she is most comfortable. Animals- Being a farm girl, animals were her life. Horses and her dog, Dragan, are everything to her. She has an affinity for animals, feeling much more attuned with them than people sometimes. Alcohol- Who doesn’t love a good drink? Alcohol is part of her culture and when she has a drink it always gives her a small sense of home. Alcohol is a great way to make new friends too! Music- Vesna loves music, especially folk. It was all she grew up with, and her mother used to sing to her since she was a baby. She isn’t a terrible singer herself, but prefers to dance or play instruments instead. One of her fondest memories is her grandfather teaching her to play his tapan in one of the village festivals. Performing- She might not be the best of anything really but she loves to perform. Vesna loves to see people’s smiling faces and hear their applause, letting her know they enjoyed the show. To her, making other people happy is all the reward she needs. Being surrounded by people- Vesna is part of a big family, and has always been surrounded by siblings and cousins. Being part of a community was a big thing for her, and her life was filled with people that loved her. Even though she’s far away she still loves to call them. And to make do in London she throws herself into community events and festivals. | Dishonesty- Trust is very important to Vesna, and when you break it you better have a good reason. More often than not she gives second chances, but she can only give so much before she accepts that the person is dead to her. Being told what to do- Tell her to do something she doesn’t want to and Vesna will do the complete opposite. She is not a child anymore, and refuses to let people dictate her life. If forced to do anything you will know how displeased she is. Being confined- Vesna is not a fan of small spaces and when she feels like she’s trapped she goes into panic mode. She can’t stand being hugged for long periods of time and being constrained from moving. In school she did poorly because she couldn’t sit still. She needs to be able to walk around or at least move part of her around. Tradition- As much as she loves it, sometimes she absolutely despises it. Vesna wants more for her life; she wants adventure and passion, not to be tied down to a man and have 10 kids before she’s thirty because she has to. It’s tough going against her parents, who expect her to move home and settle down but she can’t give up her dreams. Violence- She was born into a time of conflict and change, but managed to have violence free child hood. Out where she was, she was away from internal conflict in her country but it wasn't far enough, they did own a television and radio after all. Bloodshed, killing, it all seems so pointless to her. When Vesna sees fighting she tries to break it up, hoping for a more peaceful resolution. It usually doesn’t go so well. Losing- Whether it's losing to another person or to herself, she hates it and the feelings she gets. |
Dreams | Fears |
To Start a family- She is happy with being the favourite aunt, but she doesn’t want to be only ‘Aunt Vesna’ forever. She dreams of one day having a child or children of her own. Even just getting married would do! It’s a pretty big step and she’s not sure she’ll ever get there but it’s a nice dream, to have people close to her to love forever. Make her family proud- Vesna’s not a doctor or a teacher or anything important. She’s just a circus performer, the nice way her family puts it. All she wants to do is show them how good she is at her job, how happy she makes people. Vesna knows she’ll never be something important, but she wants her family to be proud of her and her accomplishments just the same. To swim in the ocean- It may be childish but Vesna has never been in the ocean and only got a glimpse of it from her plane. Trips to the lakes were always fun but she’s always wanted to go to the beach and swim in the ocean. She has yet to go since she’s been in England either but really wants to go one day! | Getting Hurt- She doesn’t mean falling off the horse and getting hurt, she’s done that plenty of times. It’s having her heart hurt that she fears. She always thought people liked her, until she heard some girls in her class whispering that she was really annoying. It nearly broke her. Her feelings aren’t so easily hurt but there isn’t any walls built to protect her heart. She has yet to give herself to any man either, and has always been scared by the stories her elder sisters told her. That she’s taking the wrong path- Vesna second guesses herself many times, but she always fears she’s taking the wrong path in life because of her bullheadedness. She loves her life but always in the back of her head wonders if she should have stayed in Macedonia with her family and settled down. Maybe she should have gone to university instead. There were so many paths open to her but she took the most selfish one. That she isn't 'womanly' enough- Sometimes Vesna wonders if the reason she hasn't found a man yet is because she isn't womanly enough to attract one. Even her husband to be wasn't attracted to her. She knows she's a bit of a tomboy but she likes wearing summer dresses and having nice hair. Maybe if she was more like her sisters men would find her attractive. Even though she jokes around and says she doesn't need a man some male attention would be nice. Especially having a kiss that wasn't from a dare. |
Background |
Her parents knew she was trouble the moment she was born, in the middle of their family trip one month early. Their last daughter, and sixth out of seven children, she was born in Skopje but was whisked back to the country side of Polog, where all her family resided. As per every birth in the family there was a great celebration held for the new baby, and she was given the name Vesna, for spring. From birth she was surrounded by her extended family and the people of her small farming village, and Vesna was never alone. Sometimes she felt overwhelmed, but always she knew she was loved. With three older sisters, Elena, Violeta and Marija, she was scared away from girl stuff (since they tried to make her their baby doll) and felt more comfortable with her brothers, Aleksandr, Ilija and Petar. As a young child she was expected to help out on her farm, and was best suited to working with the animals, since she tended to day dream and play in the dirt if they put her on crops. Most of the time she ran wild with the other children, mostly boys, and got into all kinds of trouble. She was brave, braver than most boys, and spent a lot of her youth getting banged up trying to best them. Vesna jumped off waterfalls and climbed as high as she could in a tree. And even she came home bleeding or broken she came back with a smile on her face. Her elder sisters and female cousins tried to rein her in and failed, but it was hard to be mad at Vesna when she was just a ray of sunshine wherever she went. She spent much time with her grandfather, learning to play all kinds of instruments and shadowing him as taught her how to care for the animals of their farm. But most all she learned patience and how to truly listen to others, both humans and animals, and how to follow your gut. Their farm was filled mostly of horses. Her parents broke and trained them for a living, and as Vesna got older, so did her love for the animals. She began riding very young, her grandfather being the only one with enough patience to teach the squirming girl. Her stunts started small, things like riding with no reins or saddle but soon she was standing, or holding herself out to the side. She felt beautiful and graceful on horseback, and riding was something she was good at. Her parents allowed her to enter small competitions in the company of her grandfather and she would usually win, but it didn’t give her the same thrill the stunts did. Her parents feared she’d get hurt but the more they told her no, the more she practiced. No matter how many times she fell or got thrown off she got back on the saddle. Each time she learned a lesson, and learned how to understand the horse so to speak. The older Vesna got, the more expectations there were for her. Once she reached her 18th birthday she was expected to at least start looking for a husband. She didn’t, of course. To her, it made no sense to settle down now, not when she had so many things she wanted, no, needed to accomplish. She finished her schooling and continued practicing her riding, much to her family’s dismay. They tried everything, blind dates, ‘accidentally’ leaving her with a family friend, even an arranged marriage. That went the worse way possible. Her groom to be didn’t want her, and left for London a month before the wedding. It was a crushing blow to her self confidence, and her family thankfully stopped pushing her. She honestly did want to get married, partially to just make everyone happy and partly because she was beginning to like Her break came when she was twenty. A gentleman from England saw her riding in one of her competitions and wanted her for his new show in London. Vesna barely asked for any details before accepting, she was too full of excitement. It nearly broke her parents’ hearts learning their youngest daughter was going off to a new country. But they accepted her decision, knowing their daughter would not be deterred, even if they weren’t happy about it. They day before her departure the village held a big celebration for her, blessing her for the trials she would face in this foreign place. It made her second guess her decision, saying good bye to old faces that might not be there when she got home. Hardest of all was saying goodbye to her grandfather, her rock, her confidant, the man always in her corner. He kissed the top of her head and told her he was proud of her, even if her parents were not. Once she got to London Vesna was completely overwhelmed. It was nothing like the life she came from, and everything was so foreign and strange to her. It was a bit scary, being a young woman in a strange place. She was able to tour their stadium, and watch one of the shows. It was like a smaller Circ de Soleil, with an added element of equestrian performance. Vesna was set up in Aylesbury with the rest of the crew, and even though she heard bad things about her new neighbourhood she found it kind of nice. Her neighbour didn’t speak a lick of English but they understood each other just fine, and Vesna babysat for free so she brought her dinner sometimes which was a plus! Practices were tough, tougher than any competition she was ever in but she proved her worth. Vesna was no quitter after all! It was nice, being with people that had the same passion for performance and horses as her, and as always she made friends easily. Eventually she was able to get into the routine of things, and with time she developed a bond with her horses so they worked better together. Circus life suited her, and she loved the beautiful displays of acrobatics and horsemanship she was surrounded by. The first couple shows she made a few mistakes, but no one was too hard on her about it and helped her push herself to be more technical and more confident of herself. Even though Vesna’s family was far away, she felt like she gained a new family with her crew mates. It has been four years since she moved to London, and still doesn’t feel all that comfortable still, surrounded by pavement. Her family keeps expecting her to give up this foolish fun and actually do something productive with her life. Sometimes she’s really happy that she only talks to them on the phone. She’s been home a few times, most recently to bury her grandfather. It was the toughest day of her life, and even though she could not stop crying Vesna encouraged her family to celebrate his life instead of mourning his loss. She knew he would have wanted a big party, and she played her tapan and danced all night long in his memory. Even though her mentor and most cherished friend was gone, the lessons he taught her were not, so it was like he was there, whispering on her shoulder. She even took back some of his favourite flowers back with her to London, so she would always be surrounded by his presence is a small way. The show has been quite a success, and every year they add more elements or change existing ones to keep it fresh. She’s even learned a few acrobatics acts too. And yes, she has yet to find a husband, and her family has not been quiet about that. It’s like she’s already turned into an old hag to them. Her eldest sister even sent her a Šarplaninac dog, which she named Dragan, since Elena saw a movie where the couple met because of their dogs and thought it might work for Vesna. She still lives in Aylesbury, and her neighbour has yet to learn any English. |

Oh did it feel good to have a break! The show was on hiatus for a week while the equipment was getting cleaned and repaired. It wouldn’t be very good if her lines broke while she was in mid air. The show didn’t need bad publicity like that. Of course Vesna missed the horses but it was good to get some ‘me’ time in once and awhile. And she couldn’t think of anything better than having a drink with her friends at her favourite bar. It wasn’t the nicest bar but it was in her neighbourhood and full of people from her part of the world. Granted there weren’t that many Macedonians there, mostly Croatians and Bulgarians, but it was nice to talk to people who had at least grown up like she had and be able to speak her native tongue, to a degree. The bar was owned by a bear of a Bulgarian named Kiril, who, despite his scary appearance, was a good guy and dependable friend. He liked a good bar fight like everyone else but if you started damaging things he wouldn’t think twice about bashing your head against the wall and throwing you out. Vesna was a regular, after coming here for four straight years, so the time she cracked a pool stick over a guy’s skull she only got a warning. She ordered a beer, smiling pleasantly and saying hello back to the other regulars she knew. Vesna was like the kid sister of the bar, since she was the youngest of the regulars and usually the only female. It had been a few weeks since she had been in, so some of the guys filled her in on what she had missed, things like fights, break ups, new things they had purchased. She laughed at their stories and patted an arm sympathetically when due until someone decided to start a game of darts. She respectfully declined and decided to enjoy her beer and watch instead. One beer turned to two rather quickly. Vesna didn’t worry though. She could stumble back to her place if she got drunk, it wasn’t that far or someone would walk her. Everyone watched out for each other here, so it was hard for her to believe the rumors that she lived in the bad end of the city. Hardly! There were some new people in the bar that she didn’t recognize, which caught her interest. People talked to them, because everyone was friendly here, but it was easy to tell they were not regulars here. Vesna paid them no mind since no one seemed upset by their presence, deciding to listen to the music instead. It was a nice tune, folk music of course. She tapped her fingers on the bar in time with the music. Maybe she should have played darts; she was feeling a bit antisocial right now. Kiril was busy at the moment so she couldn’t chat with him. Oh well, he did have to work after all. She signaled to Kiril that she wanted another. A familiar tune came onto the jukebox and everyone started singing this Bulgarian folk tune that she vaguely remembered. Vesna was yanked off her seat suddenly to be spun around a bit, laughing loudly at the guys’ antics. She made her way back to her seat, nearly crying from how hard she was laughing. Waiting for her was her beer, and she blew a kiss at a winking Kiril. Her beer was nearly knocked out of her hands when two gentlemen bear hugged her, singing the lyrics merrily. She joined in of course, probably butchering the song but they didn’t seem to mind. When they left she tried to drink her beer, still chuckling away. Oh how she had missed it here. It reminded her of her family back in Macedonia. Next time they had a month break she would go back home for a visit. She continued to hum the song under her breath absentmindedly as she smiled, starting to day dream of back home.
