Nikolai Iakovich Arlovski "Alone. Yes, that's the key word, the most awful word in the English tongue. Murder doesn't hold a candle to it and hell is only a poor synonym." ― Stephen King |

Judgemental: He's quick to judge people, since they're quick to judge him. 5 flaws in 5 seconds flat, perhaps more. If there were someone he had romantic feelings for, he wouldn't see a flaw to them. He gets that from his father, he learned that in his early teen years. He had always wondered why his father would speak of someone's flaws after meeting them for the first time. Cold: As a child he was always had problems with his emotions. Had wild mood-swings and threw tantrums out of the blue. It didn't take long before he learned to bury his emotions for the good of himself, and others around him. If he did so, no one would be able to hurt him and he wouldn't hurt anyone, yes? Though, there was a time where that didn't work and he ended up hurt. Untrusting: He finds it hard to give his trust to others, since he'd rather keep to himself. Everyone is worthy of suspicion. Though, just because earning his trust is hard, it doesn't mean it isn't impossible. And Nikolai will try to make it seem like a lost cause, since he finds no need to open up to people. Loyal: If one were to gain his trust, he would be loyal as ever. Wouldn't ever think of backstabbing them, or just leaving. He would do whatever it took so that person was alright. If someone were to betray his trust, he'd put all loyalty aside and settle the score. Family-Oriented: He does whatever he can for his family, giving some of the money he makes to them. He understands they're going through tough times and wants to make sure they're alright. If anyone tried to hurt them, he'd get revenge as quickly as possible. You can do as much as you want to him, him getting back of course, but his family is a whole different level. Targeting his loved ones is a one-way ticket to the afterlife. Better make peace with your God. Possessive: Once he gets emotionally attached to someone, there's a high chance he'll become overprotective, easily jealous, obsessive, the whole package. He just wants to make sure that they don't fall through his grasp, and he'll do whatever he can so that doesn't happen. Sometimes that's the very reason why people don't want to get close to him, he's too clingy. And as for the person he's emotionally attached to, people know to stay well away from them. Antisocial: All in all, he isn't a people person. To him, everyone is an idiot who shouldn't be given the time of day. Well, anyone except his boss. The man has to be the least idiotic out of everyone...for the most part. He has his moments. Strict: He always follows the rules that his boss lays down. He doesn't even consider in breaking them. Of course, if someone does they end up knifed to a wall. Nothing serious, just a few scratches here and there. That's only the first few times, anymore than around 7 then one will have knifes in your back. And what about 13? They would earn a knife right between the eyes. Of course, it all depends on which rules are broken. Revengeful: An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind; Not something Nikolai agrees with. He thinks that taking both eyes at once lessens a chance of his opponent trying to reach his. If someone gets him, he not only gets them back, he hits them harder. He will stop at nothing until he gets "even". Kind: Despite being cold on the outside, he does find it in his heart to want to help people in need. Especially the orphanage that's not that far away from his father's shop. He has a soft-spot for children; He would like to have a family of his own when he's older, but he knows that won't happen. Kids shouldn't have to be around the things he does, especially the younger ones. Doesn't mean he's stopped dreaming...or regretting. |

Snow: It reminds him of his life back in Belarus, his home, his family... It just gives him a nostalgic feeling. Sharp objects: They're pretty useful. Easy to use, easy to hide, doesn't make a sound...perfect. The Occult: It's interesting to look into, part of it being he can see spirits of the deceased. Doesn't mean he'll dabble in it though...well, excluding fortune telling... Reading: It gives him something to do when not going around breaking laws and wreaking havoc. Classics are his favorite. Nothing can beat the classics, well in his opinion at least. Kids: Sort of weakness of his; He doesn't like to have to do a job when children are nearby. They're too innocent and don't deserve to be dragged into such a violent life. Sometimes he's required to kill them, and every time he feels remorse for taking the life of such a young soul. | Snow: As much as he likes it, there times where he despises it. Good memories do show up, but so do bad ones. It just depends on what mood he was in beforehand. Annoying People: They're idiotic wastes of space who shouldn't be bothered with. If they attempt to hurt someone he cares for, they're asking for a knife in their back. Police: Why can't they just mind their own business and ignore him and his boss? Of course they don't. They go on frantic car chases after them. Well, at least the explosions throw them off track. Guns: They're loud and they need a lot of maintenance. He prefers knifes, but sometimes they don't make the cut and he's forced to resort to handheld guns. He doesn't mind, though, but the smell of gunpowder sometimes gives him a headache. Gambling: He already has enough money, he doesn't need more. Any he's able to spare goes right to his family. No need to try to gain more by card games and slot machines. If all else, you lose more than you gain in the end. |

Keep His Boss Safe: It's his job, isn't it? He wants to carry out his duty until the end, that end being one way or another. As long as he succeeds, that's good enough for him. Help His Family: It's dangerous to be seen around them, or even close to his father's shop. He still wants to make sure they're holding up well, and he tries to do his best to help them out when they need some aid. There's a chance they don't know it's him, since he does all his work behind the scenes. It wouldn't surprise him if they figured it out, but he just hopes they don't try to go after him. A Swift Death: Oh, he knows at some point he will die. Most likely at the hands of an enemy, whether it's another Lawless or an officer. All he can do is hope that it's quick... | Porcelain dolls: His mother used to love those, always had them around the house. They just freak him out though, staring at him with their soulless eyes... If he sees one, he'll get hysterical and throw a fit. He'll demand it to be shattered, burned, or at least locked up. It doesn't help that some people compare his skin to porcelain... Losing Close Ones: He can't bear the thought about the ones he cares about just disappearing, never to be heard of again... More so, that he's the one that makes them "leave". The thought is almost too much to bear. Dogs: He always didn't like the creature, and the feeling seems mutual. They always bark and growl at him while he just gets very uncomfortable. Cats are a different story all together though. |
Background |
He was born and grew up in Belarus. His mother died when he was young, though he didn't seem at all affected by her death. He wasn't very close to her in the first place. His father though, the man was his idol at some point. Hard working, always looking out for his three kids, the old man was just a very kind soul. His older brother was very kind, and hard working as well. Strong and determined, always did the right thing. His sister was very sweet and beautiful, at one point Nikolai had romantic feelings for her. He went after her, she kept rejecting him, but he kept to it since he didn't want her to end up broken-hearted. Instead, he ended up with the broken heart. His sister had enough and rejected him, this time more harshly than before. After that, he just gave up. In his later years, they moved to London and opened their shop there. Everything was good at first, people coming in to get their clocks repaired, or to buy new ones entirely. Then one day, well, things went downhill. The shop was going bankrupt. Of course, his father tried all he could to get money to pay it off. His older sister and brother sold most of their prized possessions, Nikolai did as well but it just wasn't enough. He then began to steal things, and sell them to others in the alleys. Soon enough they were able to pay the debt off, but that reputation of his didn't go away... He met his boss through a mutual friend of theirs years later, under some rather complicated circumstances. It was a sudden, awkward meeting; Both parties didn't expect it. They did meet up a few time later, getting to know each other better. Like with everyone, Nikolai didn't trust him right off the bat. But sure enough, he opened up to the man and they became partners in crime. Nowadays, he doesn't live with his family because he doesn't want to get them dragged into all of this trouble. Besides, what if he was back home and someone tried to get his boss? He has the urge to stay by the man's side so things like that don't happen...even though his boss can take care of himself well on his own. |

Whoever says that all of the lawless never go to a church, ever, is a dirty liar. The public act as if they're demons, and that they are unable to step on holy ground. True, there are some that don't go, for whatever reasons they may have, but Nikolai is one of the few that does. He isn't sure why he still has some sort of faith in a god, but he does and that wasn't going to change any time soon. He was raised to with that faith, and it stayed. There wasn't anything that managed to steal it away from him. Despite it all, good or bad, he still keeps believing, hoping, wishing things would get better. He knew that miracles didn't come out of nowhere, they took time. All he could do was wait for one to come, however long that would be. He isn't very religious, but he was religious enough to pray and stop by the church whenever he could. So there he was, kneeling in front of one of the pews. There wasn't anyone else around, since usually people came during services. The Belorussian tended to come when he knew others wouldn't visit, usually during the middle of the day while others were at work. He would come in silently, kneel, said a few prayers, then got up and left. He made sure not to overextend his stay, since there was a chance someone could come by and recognize him. He would be in trouble then. "...Forgive me Lord, for I have sinned...I...I have sent another up to your ranks. I didn't mean to. It was an accident... She got in the way, I couldn't help it. She was the third person this month... I'm sorry. I wish that she didn't walk in. I was just...I had to shoot her. I couldn't risk getting caught... People aren't always as forgiving as you..." he said softly, his hands clasped together, his eyes closed and his head tilted downward. He had made many mistakes before. He has done so many things...some which he regrets. He knew lawless were supposed to be "cold-hearted", "cruel", and "evil" in the public's eyes. Some of them were, he had to admit that, but there were a few who were like anyone else. They had feelings, they were just like any other person...with just illegal jobs. They felt regret, they had feelings just like anyone else, they had a conscious that made them feel guilt. Nikolai was one of them. He wasn't a cold-blooded murderer...well, usually. There are some times where...he tends to...well, lose himself... "...I...I beg for your forgiveness for the act I have done. I am well aware what could be happening to her family. Their pain, their sadness, all because of one single bullet. She...she was just a child too. Too young to have to be sent to your care. But please, take care of her...and...let her know I'm sorry..." he went on, his voice cracking slightly. God, why couldn't it have been any other person? He would have been fine if it was anyone but a child. He...had a soft spot for children. They were too innocent to have to deal with any of the dark aspects of the world. They deserved protection from that darkness, not...having to walk into it and lose their life. He could hear the rain fall outside. 'I should probably get going now before it gets worse...' he thought. He said a few more words before standing up. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. The pattering of rain on the window was a calming sound, so to speak. Now, they only reflected what he felt on the inside. He stood still for a while, trying to get control over his feelings and shove them in that bottle. 'It was just a person, they got in the way and had to be dealt with. Nothing more than that...' he thought, coat in hand. But it wasn't any other person, it was a child. An innocent child, one now laying six feet underground with a bullet wound in her head. Man, he was never going to let this go... Last time something like that happened, it took him a month or two to fully get over it. Gah, it would do him no good if the same happened now... He had things to do, places to be, people to see, and he can't afford to let himself get distracted by this of all things. |

How many friend-zoned guys does it take to screw in a light bulb? None, because all they would do is compliment it then get mad when it won't screw. |
