Nguyen Anh Linh Whether she wants to admit it or not, Linh is by all means a sociopath. She fell from the family tree at an early age and only turned into bitter fruit afterwards. Linh isn't fazed by much, seeing as how she risks her life just waking up every morning. Honestly, it would just be best if you ignored her: that's what she wants after all. Her paranoia and her self restraint are not to be tested; once you push her past a certain boundary, she has absolutely no control over her impulses. |

Contemplative - It does not bother Linh in the slightest to sit and think about things for multiple hours--in fact it's rather common for her to do. She would much rather have a long yet well-thought-out plan than jump headlong into a subject. This proves to be rather useful in her work, seeing as how she will sit down and weigh out every option and account for every detail. Most of her meticulousness comes from the fact that she's often mulling over the most minuscule of life's occurrences. If you figured that she might be a shower thinker, you guessed right. No, Linh has no time to sing that new billboard topper; she has important decisions to make. You can only guess how high her water bill is. Strategic - This really goes hand in hand with her thoughtfulness. Linh is very experienced with sitting down and formulating plans and, honestly, considers it to be a highlight of her job. She obviously has to rely on her intuition more often than not, and having a brain that is always observing, deducing and deciding also proves to be useful as well. Sabotage is one of her favorite pastimes and her schemes are not something that one would want to be caught up in, seeing as how they can be rather ruthless. Aggressive - Though Linh is indeed a quiet and distant woman she is awfully aggrieved and isn't afraid to break a few knees. Like most people in her position, she gets a rather twisted enjoyment out of it. Linh, however, has found that her temper is a difficult thing to control; her morals seem to vanish--as if she had many to begin with--and she can almost recognize an entirely different side of her taking over. It's rather unhealthy of course but helps as a motivation vehicle when it comes time. Diligent - All of Linh's aforementioned traits really do justify this. She is persistent, concise and determined. Her job is the most important thing in her life and she is the exact kind of person who will stop at nothing to reach her goals. She values her job as her greatest possession and biggest privilege and treats it as such. She doesn't let anyone get in the way and will not hesitate to step on those who try. Inscrutable - Linh has mastered the poker face and this has shown to be one of her most useful attributes in her work. As a double agent she is required to be inconspicuous and believable and her lack of visible emotions always plays handy. Unfortunately--depending out your outlook-- it's bled into her everyday life. Paranoid - Even before living her life as a double agent, Linh has always slept with one eye open until it drove her mad. She has always lived with someone out to get her and she'd be damned if she'd let something happen without at least knowing about it. She's quick to judge because of her paranoia and it more or less rules her social life now. She's very untrusting because of this which helps in her job, but has left her companionless in life. To her, everyone is guilty until proven innocent, and either way she's not always convinced. Reserved - Having been this way since she was a young girl, Linh is not accustomed to making friends nor does she want to. She lives a life of mostly solitude and she enjoys it that way. If she senses someone trying to wiggle their way into her life, she shuts down and turns away. It's almost second nature to her now, and she's become rather unfriendly in the process. Unfriendly is something Linh never wanted to be and rather resents the fact that she’s become quite so apathetic. She has no desire to hurt those who show casual interest in her but her defense system is not something she can easily control. Insecure - Do not mistake that Linh is not confident in her actions, choices or motives. She is however unconfident in her own appearance and stature. Therefore, Linh tries her best to present herself as the hardened, no nonsense woman she is. She considers herself to be horribly plain and generally unattractive and the scars covering her back don't help sway her opinion of herself. Linh is not one to be taken as shallow, for she isn't, but every woman has her own worried mindset about how she appears. Though Linh is usually left with a bitter taste when she faces the mirror each morning, she has no desire to improve herself in anyway. She has neither the time nor concern for makeup or a fancy wardrobe or anything of the sort. Witty - Though she rarely gets the chance to use this skill, Linh is very good at keeping up in witty banter. Its one part using her own mind quickly and two parts playing mind games with the other party that causes her to enjoy it so greatly. Her sense of humor, often thought to be nonexistent, is very wry. Apprehensive - Linh is always on her toes, always fearful of the worst and never considering the job to be over. Go ahead and label her pessimistic but Linh is a firm believer in Murphy's Law having been a victim of it her entire life. She just assumes it's better to always expect the worst then be caught in shock, defenseless, when the worst comes around. Family Oriented - Linh's biggest weakness perhaps is her family; though most of those she is close to are already dead or back in Vietnam. She loves her family dearly but, to her mother's dismay, does not see herself starting a family of her own. She has a soft spot for children and will go out of her way to cheer up a crying child on the streets. Linh admits that the idea of her own family doesn't bother her, but it would do nothing but get in the way of her job and, frankly, she doesn't have the emotional processes to settle down |

Complete Silence - It's one thing for someone to like peace and quiet but over the years, Linh has learned to grow an appreciation for dead silence. She loves the unearthly feeling that comes with being caught up in it and believes it to be a rare skill to be able to conform to it. Thus, Linh is fairly skilled at snooping around without being noticed. The Outdoors - She rarely gets a chance anymore to find herself in the wilderness but she has fond memories of the fields and jungles of home. She didn't live in the countryside back in Vietnam but her grandparents did and she greatly enjoyed visiting them and getting a nice change of scenery. Rain - Linh has always loved a good downpour so, lucky for her, she became easily accustomed to London's weather, apart from the cold temperatures. She doesn't mind sitting at the window while watching it rain outside or just ambling about outside. Standing in the rain brings about a cleansing feeling that she can't help but feel grateful. Long, stressful missions lead her to stand out in the middle of the rain, believing that it's washing all of her troubles away. Being Alone - Linh has always been standoffish since she was young but it has gotten progressively worse over the years. She does not dislike the company of some (mainly coworkers) but she much prefers to spend her time alone. Her cousins teased her as a young girl, claiming that she would grow up to be a lonely old maid and she has always considered their prediction to be accurate. Flowers - Linh is a bit embarrassed by her love for flora, seeing as how it greatly contradicts the rest of her personality. Her apartment is usually full of fresh flowers and Linh always makes time to stop and smell the roses. Such things bring her back to her simple childhood--a much better time to picture herself in. | Long Conversations - Linh is not objected to having a drink with coworkers or 'acquaintances' but do not expect her to carry on a conversation. She might contribute a few words here and there but it is difficult to completely capture her interests and keep her talking. She's an observer and would much rather observe the people talking than respond. Sentiment - Linh considers sentiment to be weakness and, if at all possible, she chooses not to let it contribute to her ideas or actions. It exists, deep down within her but she pushes it back until she herself forgets it's even there. She's convinced that if anyone saw her letting her emotions dictate her actions, they would not hesitate to use it against her. And they probably would. Being Looked Down On - If Linh ever gets the chance to prove someone wrong of their assumptions of her, she will not hesitate to do so. Misogynists are the bane of her existence and she quite enjoys stepping all over those who doubt her. Disrespectful People - Having being brought up as a very respectable and well-mannered child, Linh has no patience for those who don't practice the same mannerisms. She's not always the most polite in certain interactions but she gives her respect where respect is due and expects the same. Backing Down - Giving up, unless it's an order, is not an option. If Linh has her mind set on a goal, she will not quit until that goal is achieved or she is dead. In fact, she'd much rather be dead than have to admit defeat. |

Finishing her Undercover Work - Linh's in the business for one reason and one reason only: to find the men who killed her father. That is her ultimate mission. If she can complete that, Linh has promised herself that she'd retire and actually make an attempt to either start a family or just situate herself in a comfortable life; frankly she doubts that she will ever get married. So far, she's been terribly unsuccessful and doesn't see this happening any time soon, but her constant diligence only means that something could change in an instant. Surviving the Afternoon - Linh doesn't have many long-term goals, mainly because of her current occupation. It requires she lives each day as its own and pay attention to the now, so she doesn't get to pay much mind to the future. Basically, Linh's happy if she gets to go home in the afternoon instead of waking up dead in the gutters. Scraping up What Remains of a Family she can - By now you understand that Linh is completely motivated by family. She risks her life every second of every day to piece together the shattered bits of a family that never really cared for her that much in the first place. And though the idea of ever loving someone scared her more than having a gun pointed to her head, Linh could never deny the fact that she doesn't want to die alone. She doubts that she'll ever actually return to her family but that doesn't mean she can't have a makeshift one of her own. | Fires - Ever since the house fire that left her scarred and tore her family apart, Linh has been a bit of a pyrophobic. She's fully aware of all the harm and damage that it can do and can barely stand the memories it brings with it. Mental Illness - Linh is as fit as they come, except for her mind. After having been observed in her basic training, she had been recommended to a psychiatrist to be checked for any sort of mental disorders. After testing, it was revealed that she had shown signs of paranoid personality disorder, schizoid personality disorder and intermittent explosive disorder. The first two didn't bring up enough concern for further testing but the discovery of moderate IED proved to be the proper explanation as to her particular aggression during combat. Falling in Love - If Linh were ever to fall in love with someone, that would be her ultimate downfall. It would more or less defeat everything she believes and defeat is not an option. Perhaps, if her job ever came to an end, she would be more apt to the idea, but as of right now it's simply unthinkable. |
Background |
Linh was born an only child in a very large extended family in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Her father was a simple government worker and her mother a teacher—apart from that, Linh lived a normal and unimportant life. From an early age, Linh had set herself forth on the path of a sheltered lifestyle which her cousins greatly detested and poked at her for. She found real happiness not playing with other children but sitting under a tree with an old book or thinking to herself while drinking a cup of tea. Her parents chose not to object this and let her continue as she so desired. At the age of seven, her life changed dramatically. Her father was chosen as Vietnam’s diplomat to England and she was shipped off with her parents immediately. Linh adapted quickly to living in London and before long she was enrolled in a private school. She had no problem sticking to herself, devoting her free time to studies and various after-school classes her mother would insist in. She found herself in the company of one or two friends during her time at school but never bothered to stay in contact with them outside of school hours. For what seemed like a long while to her young mind, Linh lived in content peace in this new lifestyle—her existence still not harboring any great importance. Not long after she turned ten, her life took a detour from peaceful. At the dinner table one night, she heard her mother and father speak in hushed English—something which she was still learning—about something she figured was important from the expressions of her parents. Later that night she questioned her mother about the conversation, which she of course tried to avoid. All that she managed to get out of her was that some men were very angry at her father and that she was worried. Linh was kept awake most of the night, desperately trying to recall her parent’s conversation and pick out words that she could understand until she wore herself out enough to fall unconscious. She woke up late into the night in a sweat and with a cough. Alarmed by the fact that she didn’t feel feverish at all, Linh got up to get her mother but instead found the bottom floor of her house ablaze. She screamed to alarm her parents while trying to find some escape from the second floor but only found herself trapped. She made a quick bolt down the stairs between the flames and tried her best to make her way to her parent’s bedroom but found herself unsuccessful. Before she could even turn around to find another way out, Linh was completely engulfed by flames which lashed out at her, leaving a permanent mark of remembrance. She didn’t even feel her mother’s hand reach out for her and pick her up until they were both outside the house and only then could she recall a small moment of her mother carrying her out before blacking out. Her next memories were of waking up in the hospital the next morning. There was no one in her hospital room except a nurse who stopped by shortly after she woke. The nurse left Linh with bitter news from her mother: nothing was left of the house. She also told her that her mother would be back shortly but none of that had room to process in her mind. Two hours later her mother did return and she brought with her more news that her father was no longer with them. Linh could barely make out the details through her own initial shock and her futile attempts to control her emotions but she understood that he went back to retrieve some important documents and never returned. She also gathered that the fire had begun in the living room with no other known sources. Instantly, Linh concluded that the men who were angry with her father were obviously the cause of her homelessness and the death of her father. A week later and fresh out of the hospital, Linh went to the police, desperate for more information. Luckily, the embassy had information on the disagreement between her father and some man a week and a half ago. The police had identified him to be associated with some sort of underground crime ring and that was that. Linh never heard wind of whether or not the man had ever been found and, at the end of the month, Linh’s mother was desperately eager to head back to Vietnam. Linh, however, chose to stay in London to further her studies. Every night that followed, Linh was kept awake wondering what the man who burned down her house was doing or how easily he was getting on with his life until it nearly drove her insane. Linh completely shut down, not responding to anyone, and lived out the rest of her academic career consumed with ideas of how to, in some small way, find vengeance. In her final years of school, Linh found herself consumed with new ideas—the idea of pursuing undercover work. She quickly began working on tuning up herself, ensuing in rigorous work out programs, even until after graduation. When a few years, she found herself among the ranks of the MI6, more than eager to climb the ranks and jump headlong into action, getting close to the underground of the city so that she could one day avenge what was left of her broken family. |

Things, so far, had been pleasant. Of course they had already had their ups and downs and a ‘turbulent start’ could almost be an understatement, but the two were happy nonetheless. Looking back, Linh couldn’t help but notice that the turbulence was not normally caused by their ever so clashing personalities but from other people over stepping their boundaries. Linh had already grown tired of people telling her to sleep with one eye open or watch her back and that she had no idea what she was getting into. No, she hadn’t just let him walk in and sweep her away like she had all the others—over the years she had indeed grew wise and had finally knew better. Linh was nothing but skeptical at first, perhaps even a bit unwelcoming. She had to test him, after all, just to see if he was really worth her good graces. And yet, no matter how drastic her efforts, he never turned the other cheek. Amazed by his persistence, Linh finally gave in a decided to give the poor boy a chance. And that’s when she started to look at him differently. She observed him, nervously twisting her pony tail around her hands as her face flushed a bright red as she now noticed the way he looked at her in return. She looked him over closely and observed that perhaps he was much more than the persistent boy that showed up at her home one day. She knew that she had a slight lead on him in terms of existence but that no longer clouded her mind. Now she noticed how bright and excited his eyes were and how confident his smile was. She vaguely remembered Francis mentioning him once or twice but it was nothing more than the way an uncle brags on his nephew—Linh was usually more than unimpressed by the things Francis spoke so she had never really paid attention. But this was not the silly little kid Francis talked of; no, in a blink of an eye he was so much more. Linh noticed the exact moment that she swears she fell in love with the stupid man who was determined to win her over and she was terrified. For a while, she had no desire to let him know that his feelings could be returned. All at once, she was afraid of him again—scared of what he might do, scared that he might be just like the others. But he still managed to catch her in his grasp once more. She trusted him for some reason. More so than Yao, more so than Francis. She was ready to rest all of her wellbeing on this one man. And that terrified her more than anything. Had it been any other time, she would’ve spent all her focus on trying to love him the best she could. She couldn’t offer much for she spent most of her time being wary and being afraid. But, he took her hand in his and told her repeatedly that everything would be alright. She was lost for any sort of reasoning: why did he care so much, what did he want? And finally, she just gave in. For the first time, she felt comfortable in the arms of another, even safe perhaps? Linh had always been a capable woman and had single handedly drove away so many forces in her time. And yet, there was something about him that made her feel at ease. That was why she trusted him. With him, life was simple, life was about living. Things were so pleasant in fact, she had—for a while—almost forgotten that, in the end, things just never work out in her favor. The effects of civil war slowly crept up on her and she tried to hide it from him the best she could. She’d turn away with a twitch here, a cringe there; one time she completely lost control of her right arm. But still things came to light, things that he wasn’t too keen on. She sat in front of her mirror, slowly and carefully brushing out her long dark hair while she occasionally stole glances at him sitting on her bed across the room. She found relief in his company though most advised her against it. With a sigh, she wrapped her hands around her comb and set her hands in her lap before turning around to face him. Linh looked at him, a faint smile in her distant expression, and it was easy to see that she was desperate to say something—desperate to clear her mind. |
