It's alive with the beating of a young heart | It was a sunny day, and Astrit didn't have any more homework left, so he figured he might as well treat himself to something special. A trip to the park was plenty special for his purposes.
He went by bicycle, over the river and through the woods down to the park, just one of many going hither and thither in this great chimaera of a city. The trip was quick and uneventful. When he arrived at the park, he tied his bike up and began to meander along the paved path, looking around at all there was to see.
There was plenty to see. Astrit paused for a little while to watch a couple of enormous white swans ducking under the water, presumably eating the vegetation down there. A little ways down, he had to leave the sidewalk for a little ways in order to avoid a couple who were getting their picture taken. After that, he didn't run into any trouble for quite a bit, until...
Astrit blinked. The sidewalk before him was positively coated with chalk, mostly orange dotted with yellow, but also lines of red and patches of gray. “Am I supposed to walk on this?” he muttered to himself, taking a tentative step forward.
“No, no! You can't walk on the orange part!” a girl's voice shrieked, startling him into jumping backwards. “It's lava! If you touch it it'll burn you up!”
Astrit hadn't even noticed the girl—a surprising lapse, he thought, since he was so given to paying attention. Then again, when he did catch sight of her, it seemed less surprising that he hadn't before, being as she was well-nigh coated in exactly the same chalk that covered the sidewalk. Judging by her voice and attitude, she was probably at least a few years younger than him.
What's she on about? he wondered.
But further explanation was, in fact, forthcoming. “The grey parts are rocks. You can step on those because they won't burn you,” the girl asserted. “But! If you lose your balance, you have to go back to the beginning! You have to do it all without falling if you want to go through.”
Something clicked into place inside the boy's head. Man, she's persuasive, he thought. He was only doing this to humour a little kid. Definitely. That was absolutely the only reason why he stepped up to a little ways before the edge of the fiery expanse and took a careful step onto the first rock.
Heat presses in on him from below, like it's trying to lift him up, but he is strong and surefooted. He must make his way carefully, or else the lava flowing quick and hot below him could swallow him up and burn him to a crisp. Having won his way onto the first rock, he scans the lava ahead of him for another safe place to stand. There—he sees it—he leaps for it. The fire threatens this rock, though, so he does not stay longer than a second before taking a jump to the next, which is broader. This affords him a moment to plan his next few steps: there are two very small rocks peeping out of the lava that he can use as a bridge to a larger one, but he must be very precise and very quick, both, in order to take that path. He is up to the challenge; he leaps lightly, on his toes, on this and that and then safety on the large one. A satisfied grin settles on his face, as he turns to the next challenge...
When he finally leapt from the last rock to the green safety of the other side, he found himself standing next to the girl. She was taller than him—quite a lot taller, as he hadn't realized until just now. Hopefully she wasn't as much younger as he had assumed at first.
“Say, what's your name, anyway?” he wanted to know. “I'm Astrit.” | @theironlass | 662 words |

At the End of the World { Author's Note }This is the beginning to a very large and complex fanfic I've been working on, which I am now posting slowly in hopes of getting feedback to guide my progress! I hope you enjoy what I have so far, and please help me improve so that I can continue it further. { Prologue - The Last Time You'll Hear My Voice }My name is Astrit Zupan, and I want to tell you about how the world ended. I'm sure you've already heard something. Maybe you've even heard of me—either because I was one of the youngest left alive after the Event, or because of what I did after that. I know I'm a dead man. Yeah... I know what my voice sounds like, but I don't get to grow up any further. This is as old as I'll ever get. So... please, let me have this one. I'm as good as dead now—well, almost. I've got one more night to live, and I mean to use it. After I die, I'm sure that several people will want to tell stories about who I was and what I died for. That's just how it's done, and I can't stop any of them, but I'd like to at least have the truth out there. I don't know what you'll think of me after hearing this, and I don't even care much. The point is to tell the truth, no matter how it makes me look. So here's my side of the story. It starts, of course, with the Event...
{ Chapter 1 - What No One Can Ever Forget }The day of the Event started out so normal, at least for a little while. It was a few days before my birthday, somewhere around eight o'clock in the morning in Prishtina. Most kids were either in school already or on their way. I was blending in with them, as I liked to do back then. The ice on the sidewalk kept thawing and refreezing, so I was walking carefully in order to avoid slipping. They say a lot of people didn't get to see the Event with their own eyes, but I did. I was just looking up to check on some kids walking ahead of me when they vanished. Did I know, then, that I'd just seen the beginning of the world ending? H--- no. I thought I was seeing things. But the kids had been there, I was sure, and now there were just... clothes. Folded clothes, that matched the ones I had seen the kids wearing. The only reason I didn't just decide I'd lost it completely was that I wasn't the only one to react. Everything went quiet for a moment, and then a car crashed into the wall right in front of where I had stopped. Somebody screamed, and it might have been me. The next few minutes were chaos, but by the end of it, all the people on that street had sorted out that there had been young children present just moments before, and now I, estimated at twelve or so, was the youngest around. There was no sign of where the children had gone, nor any indication that they had been present except their clothes and bags that lay abandoned on the ground. We all had many questions, of course, but except for inconsequential things, there were no answers forthcoming. Someone with a cell phone had dialed the emergency number, and relayed to us the news that it wasn't just those children. It was all the children, as far away as they had heard anything. School was canceled, of course, since there were so few of us left to attend. I spent the rest of the morning roaming the city, trying to figure out exactly what had happened and why. If you lived through this yourself, you must know what I found already. But in case future generations somehow find this, here is what I learned that day: Every child in the world vanished without a trace. The whole time, searching the city, I didn't see anyone who looked younger than me, and I met several people who said that teenagers older than I was had also been among those to disappear. Hoping someone there would have some idea, I went to visit the local hospital. When I first entered, I found a woman hidden in a corner, weeping. She told me that she and her husband had wanted a child very badly for years, but they had never been able to conceive; the previous fall, they had finally managed it—or so she had thought, but now the doctors were telling her that she was not pregnant and never had been. She couldn't understand what went wrong. Although I was as scared and confused as anyone, I could tell her what I did know about what was happening everywhere, and offer a guess that she had seen the same thing. I think she was relieved to find out that someone actually believed her. I know I was glad I wasn't alone.

Mine is the singing, mine is the morning | Astrit had been thoroughly absorbed in his homework when a voice intruded into his thoughts to say, “Is that yours? I found him nearby.”
The boy looked up to see a plump, blonde woman approaching him with Morning held in her arms. “He's mine if he's anyone's,” he confirmed mildly. The young cat's normally short and sleek fur looked unusually puffy, like Morning had been scared by something. “What happened?”
As he waited for her to answer, Astrit took the opportunity to look in more detail at the woman. She was tall compared to him, naturally, but not particularly tall for an adult woman. Her soft-featured face looked somewhat familiar, as if he had seen her somewhere before but never known her particularly well. That face was framed by short blonde hair, cut in what looked to him like a very practical style. There was a pleasant, rather motherly quality to her which made him feel like it was safe to talk to her. That encouraged him to comment: “Do I know you from somewhere? You look familiar.” He wondered if he had seen her during his daily routine at some point; perhaps she was one of the people he passed on his way to school.
It was obvious that no more homework would be accomplished until the conversation concluded, so Astrit put his work aside, tucking his pencil carefully into a book so that he could find it again. Having done that, he looked up to focus his full attention on the unexpected newcomer.
Morning seemed to be pretty comfortable being held by this woman, which Astrit found interesting. Like most strays—like most animals in general, even—his cat wasn't inclined to trust just anyone. That Morning wasn't protesting being held reinforced Astrit's sense that there was something reasonably trustworthy about this woman. He liked that. He liked thinking that people might be trustworthy. | Katyusha Chernenko | 314 words |

So, here I am, on the beautiful island of Coronado, California.
Specifically, in a McDonald's in Coronado, California, because our new house doesn't... exactly... have... Internet. As you may imagine, this adds a certain degree of difficulty to posting, so I must regretfully extend my hiatus until I return to Virginia. I'll be back in action on August 24th.

So. As you may have heard by now, I'm moving cross-country with my family. Well... it turns out that this is making me terribly busy and I don't precisely have a whole lot of time or energy left over after all the cleaning and work and stuff which must be done...
I know I should post. I want to post. But I'm just too tired.

SO! Astrit and Katyusha live in the same complex. It seems reasonable that they could have met at least once. Astrit is currently living more or less alone with his cat. He might get a bit lonely from time to time, and if Madeline is moving away then Katya might get lonely too--so perhaps they could keep each other company sometimes.
