Ivan nodded slightly after the waiter, his gaze only brushing over the menu they'd been left with. Strange, a second ago he had been hungry enough to kill a man - figuratively, he would not take a life for a silly reason like that -, and now he found himself focusing more on the beautiful view of the window and the girl sitting across from him than the plentiful list of dishes Ada was holding. Maybe it hadn't been food he'd graved so much, but instead dinner, and all that it entailed? Peace, good company... now if only he had had alcohol. Well, he could do without, he supposed. He had a big job the following night, and if the previous missions had been any indication, they'd share a bottle or two before they set off. It might've sounded peculiar, to purposefully consume such substances before such a serious task, but the higher ups knew by now that alcohol didn't hinder Ivan or his men - rather, it fueled them.
The Russian rested his chin on the back of his hand peacefully, allowing his form to relax as he settled to observing the Asian girl as she spoke. He was beaming as he listened, quite delighted he had managed to strike up a conversation so easily. Ivan had always found it extremely frustrating to come up with a topic, only for the other party to not be very willing to keep the ball rolling. Still, Ivan couldn't help but feel that the girl was a bit... reserved when she spoke. Was it just a difference in cultures? He was very well aware that most his own countrymen could come off as somewhat cold and distant before you truly got to know them, so it was definitely possible, yet it made him wonder...
Well, whatever the case, Ivan figured it wasn't worth it to dwell on it too much, especially not since the woman's words were far more interesting than his (possibly misplaced) analyzes. As she spoke about the strangers of London, Ivan couldn't help but turn to peer out the window. It truly didn't take more than one glance to see that her words rang very true; people were mostly concerned with themselves, hardly raising a hand or tipping a hat off in greeting to those they passed by. It wasn't anything alien to the Russian, but it was still something he had never been quite happy with. That was one reason why he enjoyed the people of the Southern nations so much; they seemed more warm, open, willing to mingle.
"Mm..." Was all the Russian replied with, along with a slight nod of his head to signal he had both understood and agreed. A pause followed, as if the girl had gone through a mental list of things she had to say still, before she continued.
“I got a scholarship from the Imperial College,”
And that one sentence was rather enough to make the man blink and slightly raise his chin from its resting place. Eyes just a tad wider, it was clear the Russian was impressed. It might've sounded a tad mean, but he hadn't taken her for the studious, intelligent type. She seemed so sweet and just a tad bit naive, youthful and ignorant to the horrors this world held. He had expected her to be a nurse or a social worker in training - stereotypical as both roles were, they were something he could picture the girl enjoying. But to think that she was majoring in Physics, instead...
Slowly, Ivan's lips curled into what appeared to be something between a smile and a smirk, and his eyes seemed to almost gain a slight glow in the light pouring in from the window just beside them. He was silent, unmoving, and just one glance in his direction was probably enough to tell he was picturing something in his mind, evaluating, imagining and pondering.
The girl was friendly, appeared naive, was smart, and shared his ideals... Yes, she did seem like a perfect candidate in every way he could think of. And to top it off, she would be a very nice diversion of all the rugged men surrounding him at work.
He had to get her.
And when the tall Russian decided he wanted something, then like a hardheaded child, he did not give up before he had what was his. Surely, it wouldn't even be that difficult this time. They were already this close to each other; she would probably be thrilled at the prospect of a job and some extra cash. Even with a Scholarship, London was not one of the cheapest cities of the world, and if he had learned anything from his sisters back home, it was that a young lady always needed money for something.
“How about you?" The girl asked just then, and Ivan immediately raised a curious brow, smile still in place. Oh? Was it his turn already? Well, sounded reasonable. "You’re also not from England. Are you here just for the show or you have other business in London?”
"Oh, was it my accent?" Ivan replied to her question with one of his own, even if it was more a lighthearted one than anything else. "Mmm. And I've tried to get rid of it so hard, too..." He sighed very shortly, then giggled a bit to himself in a show of amazingly fast recovery from sulking. "But, yes, I'm definitely not from here! I moved here because of a job."
He pouted a bit, hanging his head so that parts of his scarf folded onto the wooden table in front of him. "I've been here for so long, but have never had time for these shows before. I'm a biig fan of theatre, and still..."
Smile returning, he looked up at the girl again. "But~ I will get to see it today, so I'm happy. Especially since tomorrow, I have a big job coming up. Ah~," as if he had just remembered something, Ivan suddenly paused. His sharp, almost expectant gaze fell on the girl, and after a moment he continued, still smiling, yet every word somewhat stronger than before as if to make sure she understood the hidden offer underneath them. "See, the trouble is that we lack employees, so it makes it hard to have vacations. The pay is good, but not many people know of us, or they shy away because of the nature of our job... It's really, really a pity."
Now to see if she took the bait, or if he'd have to start fishing with a bigger hook.
